I've recently moved to downtown Coral Gables and I'm loving it. I don't go to beaches very often but I am looking to visit more frequently now that I'm retired. I've been to South Beach many times as a tourist over the past few decades but I'm now that I live in the area I'm looking to explore less "touristy" places. I've already checked out Virginia Key a few weeks back and really enjoyed it. Especially the areas where the egress to the water is walking through the mangroves. Being retired I do have the ability to do most of my exploring on weekdays instead of dealing with crowds on the weekend.

I would like some advice from locals on your favorite beaches, preferably less than an hour drive from the Gables.

I would also like to take a day trip meandering through the keys. Any input on less touristy but still picturesque areas to explore there would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Less than an hour? Opens up alot of options. Las olas beach, Hollywood beach, Brandon park, NoBe. Many many options

The Key Biscayne beaches are the closest to Coral Gables and are probably the least touristy/overdeveloped beaches in Dade County. It's surprising how few beach options there are in Dade compared to Broward and Palm Beach counties. The barrier islands in Dade county are more spread out so you have larger inlets but less beach. There are no barrier islands south of Key Biscayne, so you don't have the sandy beaches with the waves rolling in.

Secret Local Alert: While most tourists go to South Beach north of 5th street, many locals frequent 3rd street beach, especially early in the morning when some do a little nude sunbathing.

Seconding Matheson Hammock. It's the closest and it's got a nice low key vibe. The Redfish Grill is cool (assuming it's still open?).

Having many little kids, I pick my beach considering ease of parking.

If I was by myself , I'd rather go to Hollywood beach or the Ocean Terrace area. Places where i could grab a quick bite and then go back to the sand.
