Hey there,

I'm a 22-year-old black girl who is applying to graduate school. I'm originally from Westchester, New York and I've moved down to Winter Garden (Orlando) with my family. It's been an okay experience but it's a little bit slower than I'd hoped for. I'm in my early 20's and I wanted to have the same experiences I'd have back at home. I was considering going back to NY for grad school having gotten into Fordham U (yay!) and I'm so homesick!. Sometimes I wonder what I think I'm going back to because New York is so expensive and most of the people I knew up there have either left or they're about to leave. I guess I'm still holding onto the fantasy of being a city girl.

Anyway, due to money NY doesn't seem like a possibility. So I've applied mostly to schools down in Miami with the exception of UCF, which is closer to Winter Garden. Now, being a black girl, I've avoided applying to schools in certain areas because I have a fear of experiencing discrimination I'm not used to. So I've focused on FIU, FAU, Barry and USF up in Tampa. Which of these schools do you think I'll have a good experience?

I want an eclectic friend group (I'm a girl from a white neighborhood but I have friends of all shades!) and I want to be able to party. I also want the school that has the most prestige, since I need all the connections and help I can get. I also want a school in a safe area, and due to me being from up North I don't know the vibes the areas these schools are in. To put things into perspective, I went to Iona U in NY, and if I had the money I'd definitely go to Fordham. What would be a close equivalent to those schools, plus maybe some partying and fun mixed in? Thanks! Hope this wasn't too long of a post

I'm from Westchester, lived in Orlando, and came back to NY. I don't know much about the colleges (I went to Valencia in Orlando to take some courses years ago), but I just wanted to say since you are from NY you might like Miami better than Winter Garden. I know what you mean, being from NY you cannot find anyplace else like it in the country, I even found southern Ca slow and boring. Maybe the rise in crime in NYC will decrease going forward and people will feel safe there again. Hopefully another poster will answer your questions about college. Good Luck.

My honest advice would be to simply attend the best program in your field regardless of where it’s located. If it’s a masters, we are only talking about a year or two.

Aside from that, it might be worth applying to Fordham if that’s your top choice because a lot of the expenses will covered if you can work as a TA or conduct research. Within Florida I think U of Miami is probably the closest thing to what you want. I don’t think you’ll be happy with the other schools you listed.

What is your major?

I got my master’s from UM and bachelor’s from UF. There was a big difference in the desire to party among my classmates in both schools. I don’t attribute it to the schools since in grad school you tend to be more determined as your concentrating on your major. I’m currently in Gainesville and even now I’ll see posts from other message boards asking about housing for grad students as they feel the younger students would interrupt their studying with parties and such. True or not, I know UF has dedicated grad school housing so there might be a bit of truth.

I say go to the school that has the best reputation for your major, considering your location and budget constraints. That decision will also help in making connections too.

Good luck!

Can you elaborate more on this? What area concerns you? I'm familiar with most of the Florida state universities and their social atmospheres (although I'm much older than you so it'll be a bit outdated).

Also if you're looking for a faster pace of life, more similar to NY, Winter Garden is NOT it. You need to head down to the Miami area and try to get accepted into UM, FIU, and possibly FAU.
