I am interested in moving to Miami, but everyone just keeps telling me how "dangerous" it is. Well of course, its a city! Isn't it just like any other big city? Full of crime? Well its starting to get to me so I need to know if its really that bad?

This is how I feel and I live in the nicer parts of Dade county.

I pretty much look over my shoulder once I leave the front door. I never leave windows or doors open/unlocked while I am home alone. We never leave the windows open at night just incase someone crawls through. I never leave anything of value in my car...I never open the door to someone I don't recognize. You have to have a house alarm... when I leave a store and drive home, I try to start looking at the car behind me a few miles from home, just incase someone is following me home...

Do I feel safe, yes and no.

If you want to feel safe, I suggest you move to a place like Cedar Rapids.... I've lived in NYC, Miami, LA and SF. Miami is like any other city... You just have to be smart and aware of your surroundings. If you're really concerned about safety, you can always live in a high rise condo with lots of security - Brickell Key comes to mind. Good luck!

That's why there are so many walls and high fences in Miami; people don't trust those they don't know -people from different countries, who speak Moderator cut: edit: "foreign" languages. Walls and compounds are especially prevalent in the newer parts of Miami built in the last 10-20 years or so. Doral, Aventura, and West Kendall come to mind... The new Miami is quite different from the old.

The same could be said for America in general. Look at the newer parts of Palm Beach County or any other Sunbelt city, which represents the "new" America. It's the same thing for where I live too, it's all compounds.

There's a difference between privacy and safety and then comes paranoia.

Move to Westchester.

Not a big crime neighborhood.

Westchester isn't that bad! It's one of those "paved lawns and burglar bars" areas but those areas usually aren't dangerous, actually they are usually pretty safe.

My dad has been living in westchester ever since we came from cuba ( 10 years ago ) and it's a pretty safe community, with only 'petty' crimes.
