My roommate is leaving me in December so it is time to find a new place to live. Is little havana generally cheaper or is something wrong here? It is a 2/1 for 850 a month. It looks like a nice place to be honest but obviously in Miami anything is possible. Does this price seem too good to be true for Little Havana? The address is 1530 SW2nd st. I'm actually going now to check the area.

I saw the building you're looking at on Google Earth. It looks like a decent 4 or 5 story low rise complex surrounded by single family homes. It probably is a good deal but watch out, you'll be the only gringo in the area. Also, this is the area where you listen for celebratory gun shots on holidays (ie New Years).

Is it an area where you are safe if you are smart? Or more of an area would you say that it is shady either way? I drove by out there and it looked fairly typical, obviously not a pretty area but seemed like people were walking around everywhere.

Well, burgler, I'm not even sure why I'm helping you here, but what the heck.
My 1 penny's (deflation at work) worth.
I would not live there.
Craig's list for roommates, Miami New Times any number of other sources should line up something better.
Just my penny's worth.

The funny thing is is that you never usually see people walking around in the better areas of town. Go to the suburbs and you'll hardly see anyone out.

Anyway, it's not a tremendously bad area. My friends live around there on SW 12th and they haven't had too many problems. As long as you're street smart you should end up fine. Spanish definitely helps there too.

It's not suburbia safe, but it's not as bad as the northern neighborhoods of Dade. There are honest, hard working people living around this section.

How about something more in the downtown/brickell area? Will it be difficult finding something in the 800-900 dollar range for a 1/1 in that area? I've been doing some searching but a lot is sending me to NE miami or overtown.

Little Havana - celebratory gun shots are not uncomon on holidays or birthdays... You make the decision youself Mr. UM student. I would seek the Grove if I was you...

No, Little Havana. Brickell you'll have to shell out 1,000/ month in an older building for a 1/1. Look to the apartment buildings on North Bayshore Drive, which runs parallel with Brickell, but is on the water. Contact me if you need more info.

why don't you check out rentals listed in The Flyer? You could get one of those "studio apt". They're really usually efficiencies but you could get something private, in a nice area, with utilities included. There are plenty of ads.
