I understand the issues facing middle income families but as a single guy going down with a buddy of mine looking for entry level positions for quick cash in restaurants who is looking for apartments to share with roomates it sounds to me like my biggest issue going to be the fact that I am not fluently speaking spanish. Until the time may come when I want to own property of course, then I can relate with a lot of the biggest issues you guys are concerned about.

The hurricane issue is always going to be a big problem as well but if there are shelters availuable Im not too worried..

Yes if you are willing to live with someone else you can make it. However, I cannot imagine how that can be a pleasant life for long. There are hurricane shelters available, and if you do not have a home to worry about you could always leave town before of after the storm. The language barrier is a problem, but some areas like south Miami and parts of Miami Beach are not as bad as little havana, sweetwater, etc. In some ways you would be living like a tourist and working/going around town so it could be OK.

Well it's not something I want to do forever (have roomates) but for now it's still ok. My longterm plan of course is to meet the girl I want to stay with and get a house, but right now it's just not possible. I live in a small dead end town. I need to get to a bigger area where there are more things to do, and more opportunities. Right now I just have a general business degree which doesn't help me at ALL around here and my resume is filled with the food and service industries with some sales and supervisor experience. All pretty low entry level job stuff.

My plan is to eventually get back to school (sooner than later) and get a quick degree for a specific skill so I don't have to be locked into these low wage jobs. That being said if you get the right job in the restuarant/entertainment industry you can make quick cash. Servers make more than you think and so do barbacks, bartenders, and even busers if a restaurant is doing good business and from my travels down to Florida it seems the restuarant business is always flourishing there. Seems like it's your favorite thing to do down there is go out to eat.

If I go down there I think I could do pretty well paying the bills and getting by, even to the point of making student loan payments -- by simply having a day job at a call center with a second job working a few nights at a restaurant. It's a start, but then again there is that language barrier and that is my biggest concern.

I will like to ask, is that bad compared to what?

Maybe if we can get a place that is perfect, I will say that is bad. I have lived in many cites in the USA and all have the same problems. But is up to the residents to make a different.

Many complaint about traffic, what about Atlanta or NYC or San Antonio? Rude drivers, please provide a place that don't have rude drivers

Spanish, wow is this something new in Miami. But go to other cities and you can find more diversity of languages...

Government we all complaint, but do we become part of the solution and take an active position in local and state concerns. Some due, but many don't

What about natural disasters, what about floods, blizzards, tornadoes, etc.. Hurricanes do happen and are dangerous, but you got plenty of warning to get prepare to react. Not with the ones that above.

I'm not trying to lessen problems or situations in Miami. But is almost the same in every other large city in our great nation. If you post a complaint, please name a city (include facts) that is better so we understand your position and please compare oranges to oranges so we can better understand your input.

Thank you,

This is my view too, although I can't truely be qualified to have a view because I have never been to Miami. Still -- I HOPE that if I move to Miami i will find that just like any city it has some drawbacks but the pro's of Miami outweigh a lot of pro's in other cities with the same problems. Not every city is a tourist hub with a big service industry, not every city has winters that are as nice as the summers are up in the Northeast, not every city has beautiful beaches and palm tree's, and not every city has the entertainment or innovation that Miami has.

So if you stack up the con's of Miami against any other city they seem to hold even, but if you stack up the pro's it seems Miami has several points on many other cities. That must be why it is always consistantly ranked in the top 10-20 for American cities.

Miami only wishes it had the thriving economy, real estate market, alive downtown, successful educated people that Charlotte has.

Charlotte has crime, traffic, and godawful sprawl. summers are hotter than miami and winters are cold. real estate thrives because it is cheap. it is cheap because every rich person doesnt want to own a home there. Miami has big banking too.
