Hi, my friend's looking for section 8 housing in the Homestead area. I've read some good things about the area and of course the bad. What can he anticipate in terms of crime? I realize section 8 housing is probably not the safest, but the options are limited. Can you find low income housing in Homestead and not live in a war zone? He now lives in a large metro in NC, so crime isn't non-existant here, but I've heard so much in relations to drugs and gangs in South Florida; I was just curious. Thanks in advance!

Okay, good to know. So often, Section 8 housing means run for your life and start packin! It's cool to know my friend's going to be relatively safe in Section 8 housing, it certainly ain't the norm here.

Actually, there are both good and bad sections of Homestead. There are nice new suburban sections east of the turnpike and run down, poor ones west of it. And even further west are country, rural areas.

Section 8 housing usually does mean this. With the underprivelaged usually comes the crime. Its just the way it is. Many good people have some from nothing though, its all in which way you want to steer your life!

I've never heard of section 8 housing. Is Homestead divided into sections these days?

Section 8 is housing provided by the government for the less priveledged families in society.

Less priveleged? You mean people who don't have enough money to pay for rent and still be able to pay for other necessities, right?

I'm not sure if you're aware of the existence of section 8 rental vouchers, which can be used anywhere a landlord will accept them. It makes it hard for the would-be renter if the landlord assumes that anyone who's poor will turn their rental property into a ghetto.

I knew a woman who worked at a grocery store in Homestead and she said some folks would use food stamps and at the same time buy expensive alcoholic beverages and items. She found that weird.

Yes the system is abused. Nothing new . Take a drive through the ghetto. You will see Navigator's and Escalade's in front of piece of **** houses.
