So this happened a few weeks ago.

I was walking to the escalators at the Government Center train station when I heard a *smack* to my right. I Looked over my shoulder and saw a woman face down, not moving. I later learned she fell two stories onto concrete... Luckily, the closest person to her was a police officer. Everyone nearby did a double take because no one was sure what just happened. I had to catch a train but called the Miami Herald shortly after to report what I saw so the family could be notified (I probably should have called a television news station). The Herald got in touch with the police and they called me back, saying it was probably a suicide. None the less I was freaked out!

Suicide from a second floor?

Ppl don't know what they are talking about...

oh, but the first floor is like 40 feet high, hummm

I was there some weeks ago. But if you are going to comnit suicide, why not just jump onto the oncoming train like everyone does @ metro stations?

Where did it happened though, cuz maybe she slipped or something. Sometimes the air blows too hard and the the wet floor doesn't help much.

Suicide Incidents never make it to the news. I have always heard from people jumping from buildings in downtown and Miami Beach (from people who were around the area)

That's true, I wonder why that is.

Maybe family members don't want people to know such things.

That was the first thing I thought too. It seems the likelyhood of just getting seriously injured or crippled would be too high to risk it. I mean, ever so often you hear about someone surviving a higher fall than that.
I haven't heard anything about the suicide rate in this bad economy we've had over the last two years but I bet it is up.

Because it's still fairly taboo. If we don't acknowledge them, they'll go away.

Have you ever noticed how obituaries pre-1970 or so were always more descriptive about a person's life and how he died? They were able to elaborate without being sensational or disrespectful. I wonder what went wrong...

I know years ago at the Taj in Atlantic City they ended up locking and bolting all the balcony doors because people loosing their money would jump from them. The same with Trump Plaza.

I assume that's why they don't have balconies on hotel/casinos when they build them nowadays, for the most part.

So my point is with the down economy, it could move the suicide rate up, but whenever something bad happens, there seems to be a certain mentality in some people that this is the only way and things will be better if they're gone.

There are many reasons why people commit suicide. In general, people try to kill themselves for six reasons: (according Alex Lickerman medicine physician at the University of Chicago )

1. They are depressed
2. They’re psychotic
3. They’re impulsive.
4. They’re crying out for help, and don’t know how else to get it.
5. They have a philosophical desire to die.
6. They’ve made a mistake.
