Anyone have a statistic on how many cars crash into houses here in South Florida? Seems like one every week or so? Doesnt seem normal. Anyone have facts on this one? Very confused.

I do not have any statistics, but saw firsthand the aftermath of a house that repeatedly had cars crash into it. The house is located on SW 112 St (Killian Dr) where SW 107 Ave intersects at a T. Three cars in one month crashed into this house, and a very small and ridiculous roundabout was built there to prevent people from running the stop sign at 107th Ave.

Now the house is protected, but no one seems to understand the concept of "Yield" signs and using turn signals in roundabouts to make things run the way they're supposed to.

I go through 4 roundabouts each way on my morning commute --- by and large they seem to work out well.
I'd love to see before and after statistics for that too (accidents per intersection), but I don't think they keep details like that -- too city specific.

On a related note, has anyone else noticed the cops all over S Miami/Pinecrest and the Gables giving out tickets like crazy?
It seemed to start after the holidays; maybe the cities are looking for an income stream or maybe it's a more coordinated effort ... don't know. But frankly I'm glad that their out there ESPECIALLY in the school zones!

No, what I'm noticing has been a DISTINCT increase in speed traps (University near Bird in front of the church/school is a popular one) or motorcycle cops pulling over folks blocking the intersection at Ponce/Le Jeune or Pinecrest cops hiding in the "shadows" along 35mph roads.
Normal stuff but ALL THE TIME in the last 2 months. Much more noticeable than December back (to me) and not end of the month stuff.

Probably the cities need some $ in this economy. Either way it's a good thing.

I have lived in Miami so long, that cars crashing into homes isn't abnormal, that's pretty sad. The problem is we have many people that are driving on the streets of South Florida without a license and no insurance for that matter.

Someone told me a week ago, that the cops will be out looking for money the next month and to be careful. I have seen the speed traps all over lately. Which is nice in one respect as there is a police presence, but stinks if you get a ticket. So for the month or so i will be watching my speed.

Miamiblue - I know that exact house you are talking about. I remember when their house got hit a few times. Finally the count put that metal barricade up to protect the house, the homeowner put a red light on the corner of the house as a stop signal of sorts. Then the round about went in a year or two later.

Weird. The same thing happens a lot in the part of Central FL I live in now. Seems like once a week this happens. Very, very odd.

The Gargoyle - Flagler College's Newspaper

"The bill initiating the traffic violation changes went into effect on Feb. 1."

Localities and the state need more money. It's an insidious system, where the government profits from people breaking the law. It sets up perverse incentives. All fines should go to the federal government. Law enforcement should not be about raising revenue.

Totally agree, excpet the part about the money going to the federal government. Instead I wish they would give you a checklist of charities that you could have the money sent to. People would feel less upset at shelling out $150 for a speeding ticket if they knew the money was going to help pay for a college education of a kid who's father was killed during active duty in the armed forces.

Then why not have ALL of the revenue generated by speeding/reckless driving fines to charity?

I'd be in favor of that.
