Hi guys. I have a question.. I'm actually going to be in Miami from March 26-29th. I'll be staying at a hotel in downtown Miami, near Bicenntenial park. (I'm attending the Ultra Music Festival that is goin' on during that time). So...my question is.. is it safe to walk.. let's say..pretty late at night about a mile from Bicenntenial Park to my nearby hotel? I'll be with a group of friends, of course. Just wondering..because it doesn't seem to really make sense to drive or take a taxi for only a mile. I'm from Chicago, so I'm used to walking in some pretty semi-sketchy places. Any thoughts?? Also, is there a lot goin' on in downtown Miami during that time? I know it's during Spring Break and there's the UMF, but do I really have to go to South Beach to find stuff to do after the festival? Thanks for any help you can give!

There is one night club district near downtown Miami, It could be walked but at night I would not walk to the warehouse night club district. As for walking to your hotel if you are in a group of lets say 4 or more it should not be much a problem. Just dont go to far west.
If you want some really good night life go to South Beach and dont be lazy just take a cab there it is worth it. South Beach is not a world famous night life spot for no reason.
Enjoy your stay and be safe at ultra, that thing can get pretty crazy. It its hot dont forget to drink a lot of water.

There is a nightclub on the north side of downtown, not in a good area. And not to far north in the Design District there is a night life there, but getting there without a car, not sure if I would walk there from downtown either. As far as walking at night in downtown, I wouldn't really suggest it. Unless there is an event downtown where there is many people around or you are in a group 6 or more people. Miamis downtown isn't like most downtowns where things take palce on the weekend. Downtown is where people work during the day, and then at night or the weekend is pretty dead (with the exception of tourists). Just south of Downtown is Brickell, and there is a small bar area called Mary Brickell Village. Also close to there is one of the oldest bars in Miami called Tobacco Road, a hole in the wall type of bar. You can get to both of these places using the Metro Mover and Metro Rail and then walking, stay in a group though. For the best entertainment and things to do you really need to go to South beach. You can take a cab or catch a bus from Bayside. If you can I would suggest changing your hotel, to one on South Beach if you can.

As long as you're in a group, you should have no problem walking around Downtown. At night, Downtown itself is pretty dead, but you can take the Metromover to Brickell for free and there are a lot of bars, restaurants and lounges in Brickell that are always packed. Brickell is a 24 hour urban center and it's really safe and clean, so you never have to worry about crime and the such.

If you want shopping, you can take the Metro to a bunch of malls south of Downtown such as Sunset Place, Merrick Park, Dadeland Mall, Miracle Mile, etc. And you might want to also visit South Beach. You can take a cab or you can take the S Bus. Both get you there fast and easy. Enjoy Miami!

Thanks for your help guys! I'm really looking foward to this trip. I've been to Miami before.. but not for a huge fest like UMF or since I've turned 21 a couple of years ago. Do you all know anything about the Ultra Music Fest? I mean, I know it attracts a lot of people, but is it really as big as they say? I'm so glad I'll be getting away from this Chicago weather for a couple of days! =]

Ohhh..and also.. I looked on mapquest and I'm staying at 270 Biscayne Blvd and the UMF is at Bicenntenial Park. It says it's a little over a mile away. Is that reasonable to walk in Miami blocks? For Chicago, that's more than walkable.

That's a really easy walk, it's like 5 minutes away, no worries. It's a nice area.

Just walk it, its not that far, and that area is pretty safe, even late at night. Specially during Ultra as there will be several thousand people walking around as well. I wouldn't advice taking a cab for that short of a distance, plus the traffic there during Ultra can be a pain.

Ultra is pretty fun. Its pricey, but I usually try to go to at least one of the days every year. Just thousands upon thousands of people dancing their assess off to good music. My advice, come dressed like you're going to a concert, not like you're going to a night club. It gets real hot. I don't know how long you're going to be in Miami, but the whole week prior to Ultra there are TONS of parties and events in night clubs all over Miami and the beach, its a lot of fun.

Default Downtown Miami

Walking in Downtown Miami late at night can be dangerous. since there are several of in a group would suggest cab at least first night in order to check out the area.

To get from NE 2nd. & Biscayne Boulevard to Bicentennial Park why would anybody take a cab for a few blocks when you can walk? When there are huge events downtown at night they are usually well patrolled by the police. Downtown Miami at night isn't dangerous unless homeless people scare you. It would be a different story if you wandered all the way west into Overtown.
