I'm thinking about moving down here within the next couple years, but I'm afraid I won't be able to afford it. I'm currently 20 and have a job, but my job doesn't really pay that good, but it seems there would be lots of computer jobs down there. Is this true? Anyways, either if there are or aren't I still got this job that I can work from anywhere in the country and I just wanna move out of this stupid state I'm currently in. How much is the average apartment for a single person down there?

Can't answer your question on the job situation in IT, but I've heard that it's tough for people in this field. If you want to target South Beach, you can get a one bed one bath for under $1,000 - maybe even $800 if you are lucky.

Why are you leaving NC? I've heard it's the promised land. In So Flo everyone is rude and no one speaks English. Crime is also worse here than any place in the world, and we have hurricanes every day during the terrible hot and humid summer. It's also a third world country with chickens in every yard.

Almost everyone I know that left Miami left for a computer job in North Carolina. I think the jobs you are looking for are up there. Down here it seems there is less and less a need for the middle class. At least that's the message the county government seems to send. The rich are welcomed and the poorish are needed to fulfill the many service oriented jobs that we have here.

North Carolina is just bleh...I never understood why people would move here. Maybe it's just cause I've lived here my whole life, but I don't know. To be honest, I really don't wanna live anywhere in this country right now, Japan is my place. But I'll never be able to move there so meh.

BryceE - I hope you understand my reply was tongue in cheek. I actually love living here. I was in NC just last month and felt the same way about the place. Didn't hate it, just didn't like it either. 'Bleh' is a good word.

All things being equal, I would rather live in France or Italy than here. But being that's not likely to happen, So Flo is a good compromise.

I'm totally down with that! If you are a single white guy you can have a different girl every night in Japan. Peeling the clothes off of a Japanese club girl is easier than peeling a banana. Oh, I hear they have temples, cultural points of interest, and stuff like that too...

I've found my crowd!

I've been living in NC for a little over a year - in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. I've treated it sort of like a breather while I establish my business (all consulting work that can be done remotely with some travel). Needed a break from the big (and cold) cities I've lived in for the last twelve years.

Anyway, I'm married with a small daughter, so I can't just pick up and move, although my wife would be more than happy to move eventually. We both like Miami, precisely for many of the reasons why those who move to the Carolinas hate it. Genuine rudeness (Miami isn't really that rude, by the way) is far better than phony politeness. Compared to some of the other places I've lived (Moscow, especially), Miami's traffic and congestion are a joke. And Spanish is something I'd very much like to learn and have my daughter learn.

France or Spain would be my ideal, but I've lived abroad already and I just can't deal with yet more document hassles and other assorted bureaucracy. Maybe for retirement or a vacation home once I've saved up enough money.

I'm thinking Miami might be feasible in the next couple of years, once the business is established, more debt is paid down and a little more cash saved up.

As for NC, it's far from the promised land. There are many things about it that I like, but I definitely feel like I'm sort of isolated from the centers of civilization.

He's 20 yrs old, he is still a kid! When he settles down, wants to have kids and a good quality of life, a place like Miami will have him running back to Raleigh.

BTW, I dont think everyone in Miami is rude and speaks spanish. I'd say... 7 or 8 out of 10? Terrible hot and humid weather? Yes. No exaggerations there.

PS- Raleigh would be much better than Miami for IT.
