Can I get some real comments about living in Homestead? We just got back from vacation and were there. I really liked the people and saw no crime, homeless or crack heads. Just nice, down home people which is hard to find in this day and age. Are there places with a little land to raise chickens, maybe a cow or horse? We are not rich and can only afford the basics but that's ok with us.
Thanks for any advice.

I love Homestead, and just to the north of the city limits is the area called the Redlands. This is in unincorporated Miami-Dade county. I feel that we get better services within Homestead....their own police force, own power company, yard debris/trash pick-up twice per month (in the county you get one/year), etc.

What do you gain by having your own power company other than high rates? I just don't see any benefits.

What do you gain? Much quicker repair service after storms.....my experience since 1993. This past month's electric bill was $65.00 which includes a $30.00 fuel adjustment cost. I use a.c., don't have a swimming pool... We have our own water company too. One time I noticed that the grass was very green (dry season) next to my water meter. I called the water company and they were at my house within 15 minutes. They replaced the water meter within 45 minutes (their expense) and.....all the guys were good ol boys who were born down here (my editorial comment).

I love the Redlands and Biscayne National Park

I HATE Suburban Homestead, Leisure City, Princeton, Naranja, Florida City, Goulds and that whole "down south" area.

Neighborhood Scout ranks Homestead #29 most dangerous place to live. When you consider how many cities are in the U.S., That's a very bad ranking. Miami is #46

Homes are extremely cheap there right now but I would never buy there. I know someone who recently did and has already been broken into twice. Even now that they have installed an alarm system and cameras, They never feel safe pulling into the driveway at night.
