know this may be a silly/stupid question? but I am a baker/pastry cook and is seriously considering moving to Miami for career reasons, I know with many jobs being in the service industry that chances are I may find a job in my field, my question is with me moving for more money and growth (I understand that Miami has a fairly high cost of living) is it really worth it? And if it helps, Im 24, single, no kids and have really bad credit ( I'm scared of being approved for an apartment or condo when I do decide to move) PLEASE HELP!!!!! Thanks in advance ~mami

How would Cali help me being an aspiring Pastry Chef when everyone is so body/health concious?

This topic has been thouroughly exhausted....so I would recommend a search on the forum.

Otherwise, come down for a visit and see if yo would like living here. Very different from Alabama, that is for sure. I used to work at the Biltmore Hotel, where they had pastry chefs...I am sure there is work.

Housing is expensive though...and it is a tough job market to get into with out connections. Let us know more specifics about budgets and what is important to you...

I will be positive and say, anything is possible and you can be happy anywhere. Just do some research and get back at us with more specific questions. Good luck.

Don't move to Miami. Everyone in the city is latin. Latins hate everyone outside their culture. If you leave you house, you'll be car-jacked or killed. You will spend six hours a day in traffic and will be hit everyday by a hit and run driver (latin) with no license or insurance. When you get home, your house will be broken into. It's not affordable. The streets are littered with trash, feces and urine. A hurricane will destroy your house. Every business here is involved in fraud. It's a "banana republic". The government is corrupt. It's also third world. No one speaks english. I'm writing this post through an advanced translation software because I don't speak english. Lastly, someone here in Miami thinks that the whole population should be removed. You'll see. All the locals will soon post and back me up. How did I do guys?

i knew WAYY more pastry chefs personally in LA than i have in miami. 3 come to mind immediately. people here dont have hobbies and certainly dont turn hobbies into careers the way they do in california.
i dont know a single pastry chef here. not only that but theres a demand for it 5 hours away from los angeles in vegas. so if you dont have enough demand for pastries in LA (very VERY unlikely) you can always do stuff on the weekends in vegas. here youd have to specialize in cuban or other latin ethnic pastries because thats all theyre interested in.
despite LA being body and health conscious there is TONS of junkfood and yummies consumed. there are simply so many people you have it all.
btw are you sick of eating pastries like my friends who were pastry chefs were in LA?

Have you thought about moving up north somewhere. There is a pretty steady culinary job market in major northern cities like Boston, New York, Chicago, etc. If you end up in a good spot there will be opportunity for growth. Or maybe you can land a job working for a Restaurant at a Casino in Vegas. I'm just saying don't limit your options to Miami. Your career allows you plenty of options.

The only rough part is the credit. You are going to have trouble finding a place in a lot of cities if you have bad credit.

Iknow Boston and Chicago are really good cities for me career wise. I'm actually from NY originally (Buffalo), I've been in alabama for 3 yrs now and I really want to stay where it's warmer. I've considered Vegas also.
