Hello,

I was just offered a position with Florida International University in Miami. My husband and I are considering relocating from Vermont to South Florida to live closer to my stepson, who lives in Boca Raton. I was hoping to get some advice on areas to look for housing, anywhere between the school and Boca. The school is located in the western part of Miami by the Ronald Reagan Turnpike and my stepson lives in West Boca. We would rent for the first year and need a three bedroom (we also have twin 12-month-old girls). Our budget is around $1,700 a month. Is that doable? I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you!!!

I am a real estate agent in the area. While it's possible to find something that low, it's kind of a stretch, and most people will pay more for a 3 bedroom.

In good news... you won't need a budget for heating and winter clothes!

Thanks AnnRyan. That definitely helps, along with the time savings not having to bundle the little ones in layers and FL not having income tax.

Are there any specific cities we should target?

Hi Emily,

Congratulations on your new appointment! If you are seeking a rental in the market area of the school the rentals are a lot more reasonable in the Miami, Kendall area - a bit higher in Pinecrest. Considering that your stepson lives in West Boca. If you want to be any closer to him, you would have to relocate to west Broward or Palm Beach County and that would be a long commute to work - yet closer to him. I am a realtor and would be happy to work with you on your relocation here. Feel free to contact me in private.

The nearest areas are going to be sweetwater and Doral, and Doral is going to run a free trolley to FIU next year. 1700 would be a low budget for a 3 bedroom, but you can definitely find a 2 bedroom for that price.
