Would like to live no further than 10 miles from Miami Int'l Airport, in a safe neighborhood. I'm looking to spend no more than $800 for 1 - 2 bedroom apartment. Don't want to be in party central or ghetto. Any suggestions?

Good luck. Just being honest. You are going to have to go at least 20 miles for under 800 a month.

The closer to airport, the better chance you end up into central of ghetto. Why 10 miles is so important to you? People in Miami use FLL airport a lot too.

As Compelled pointed out, you're going to have to fork out a bit more than $800 to live somewhere non-ghetto so close to the airport. I would recommend East Kendall, but you'll probably have to shell out at least $1,000 for something relatively decent.

What about Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens (? name), Doral?

Wouldn't all of those areas be at least 1k a month? Definitely not 800! For "no more than 800" and a "non ghetto" or "non party" area, I would think you would have to either go as far south as Cutler Bay (yes there are good parts) or as far north as Hallandale Beach. Even WEST Kendall isn't cheap.

Due ro rampant chain-immigration, rent in many of Miami's slum like areas remains quite high - in spite of what you get. This is because entire generations families often occupy the same dwelling, hence the cars everywhere.

I would have to agree with compelled. In order to find an area with "normal rent" where "you pay for what you get", you probably have to go way South (ie Homestead) or way North, (most places in Broward).

Miami Springs is nice, but it's not cheap. As for Doral or Sweetwater, you'd really be pushed to find anything decent for less than $1,000 (in fact, $1,000 is the going rate, which a co-worker of mine is paying for a 2BR apartment in Fountainebleau).

$800 in Miami-Dade will put you in Cutler Bay for instance. I don't think $1000 is even going to get you in Kendall. I could be wrong. My sisters 1br, 1.5 bath plus den is $1,400, 1100 sqft, very nice in Kendall.

I'm with vpcats, I think Miami Springs is a good suggestion, if you search carefully you should be able to find a 1br apartment for $800-900. I know people who lived there. Most apartment buildings are located in Royal Poinciana BLVD
