Depending on your vehicle, your auto insurance will probably be about $700 every six months. You will definitely need to have a car to get around in Miami. You will want renter's insurance for sure - not sure how much that goes for, but it's farily inexpensive, maybe around $20/month.

Utilities will vary depending on your apartment. I used to pay an average of about $90/month for a small 2br. You will probably be running the A/C at least 8 months out of the year.

Health insurance is a big question mark. It depends on if your employer offers it or whether you have to go it on your own. It can be very expensive for halfway decent coverage, and you are not guaranteed to be covered if you have a pre-existing condition.

I would agree that you could probably live fine on $60k. You won't be living the high life, but you can still get by and have fun.

Drink and cover prices vary depending on what types of places you'll be frequenting. If you like the frou frou places on Miami Beach that you see on TV and in the movies, I would guess an average cover is probably $20. I remember getting a dixie cup filled with ice that they called a whiskey sour for $11 at Sky Bar about five years ago (with a $40 minimum to use a credit card). Not sure what that would go for now.

If you don't care for the frou frou scene, you can find decent pubs and lounges with no cover before 10 and more reasonably priced real drinks.

I was thinking exactly 60K/yr but NET, so about $5,000/mth.
Figure about 2K for a 1 bdrm in Brickell or the beach with electric, water and other simple amenities.

Will you have a car? Car payments? Car insurance? Gasoline, maintenance.
A Beemer? Audi? Figure at least a $1000/mth on that.

The rest would be party money.

Well, I just read the rest of the posts......Guess we were all on the same page regarding $$$$ but my figure is AFTER taxes.

I forgot about phone & credit cards (although you should not carry a balance on those because they will destroy you). I also forgot about clothing, so you party a little less.

Gym? Nah, don't spend money on that. Get into a building that has a gym and its use is included in your rent. Otherwise go for a real cheap gym, if what you're trying to do is work-out.

Food? You put $50 for food? Is that per day or per week or per month? Nah.......MUCH more than that. Try not to eat all your meals out every day. Maybe you'll make some friends who can cook and will invite you every so often.

Don't go out TOO much either. It will get old real fast.

There are plenty of nice places in Miami where you won't pay Brickell prices. Brickell is beautiful but you pay a premium for living there. A friend of mine moved from Brickell to just a few blocks away in what is still a nice neighborhood and he is saving about $200 a month in rent.

NO! I implore you, don't come to Miami! Miami is the worse city I've ever lived in. This city is built around the latin culture and has close to zero tolerance for outsiders. The gangster/thug mentality is rampid here.

If I may suggest some alternatives with a great night life:

New York
Los Angeles

As William said, this city is built around Latin culture, and if this bothers you don't come. However, he's wrong when he says they have close to zero tolerance for outsiders. There are a lot of people here from Europe and the rest of the US, and many enjoy the city a lot!

As far as rent, $1000 a month is very doable, it's just not going to be a luxury place. It all depends on what you're looking for. I pay $1100 for a 1/1 downtown. Skip the luxury car and get a Honda or Toyota, and there's more money you'll save. More still if you don't spend $450/mo. on clothes. I can guarantee you'll spend more than $50/mo. on food, especially if you're a guy who hits the gym a lot.

In the end, Miami does have one thing in common with every other major city in the US--there are all types of people here, and your experience will primarily be what YOU make of it!
