Anyone work at Southcom here? Need some recommendations on possible neighborhoods to consider when moving there. Are there any military heavy communities around?

A lot of the people that work at Southcom tend to live in the Doral (where Southcom is located), or Fontainebleu, which is a little further south. They're pretty decent areas, and very close. I wouldn't consider them "heavy military communities" though, the closest area in South Florida you'd find that could even be considered that would probably be down in Homestead.

Doral. Homestead was once very heavy military with Homestead AFB. Since Hurricane Andrew however, the base was pretty much abolished and what is left is insignificant....so there really is no "real" military presence there anymore.

No real military areas in Miami any more, they are all spread out basically.

What's the deal with Homestead AFB? I heard their operations were scaled back dramatically. I used to see C-130's and KC-135 inflight refueling tankers flying over the Everglades whenever I drove to the Keys. Now I don't see any...

C-130

KC-135

Do you mean you saw this recently or many years ago? They had to close as an active duty base since a lot of the housing/support facilities required of an active duty base were destroyed in Hurricane Andrew. They were able to salvage the airfield though so it's now a base with a reserve F-16 unit.

I want to say during the mid-late 1990's, even into the early 2000's.

The base used to be a big deal before Hurricane Andrew, thats why there is that fighter jet on US1 in Homestead. You still see the big planes every so often landing at the base. I saw one doing laps over Kendall a few weeks ago, not sure if they were doing something but it just was odd seeing this huge military plane flying low doing lap three times. And the fighter jest you see them, taking off and practicing. Its pretty cool actually. But its nothing like what it used to be.

The active duty unit got cut out after Hurricane Andrew practically destroyed the base. The reserve unit stayed behind, and we still run day to day operations out here. We also have quite a few tennant units out here from other branches.

FYI Homestead ARB is holding a free air show Nov 7 - 8 (Wings Over Homestead), if you're into that sort of thing.
