I would add Key Biscayne (the homes not condos) and Palmetto Bay.

Most people who live here don't go to South Beach unless they're in college (for the party scene) or have people visiting from out of town. The Miami you see on TV and in movies is a caricature of what a tiny part of Miami is really like. If you are wealthy, you can live well here. But if you aren't, well...your mileage may vary.

We are planning to leave Miami within the next year because we're just not happy here anymore. My parents and inlaws are here, but my brothers left years ago.
Giz - You list many of the reasons we left - housing; expensive utilities (SFL - FPL is ripping you off in a grand way!); unfixable property taxes; traffic; poor schools (had to pay for private) etc. etc.

That being said - I dont think the city is overrated, its just not for everyone and certainly not one for young families.

Diannea, you will not regret it. Take it from me, I lived 35 years in Miami and it has become a complete ****-hole. I've been gone for 5 years now and reluctantly visit once a year just to see my relatives but even that will taper-off soon. Good luck with the best decision you'll ever make in your life!

Com

Nobody would pay a red nickel to visit or live in the place where you're right now. That's why you hate Miami, you can't live there. Miami is not overrated, the city just overpriced you out.
