Also, mass transit like streetcars is more beneficial in places with higher density. So the benefit received in Portland would likely be greater in a place like LA or Miami.

The only thing worst than no subway in NYC would be having a streetcar in NYC. By the way the subway does a poor jobs at getting rid of taxi's in Time Square. Some places are beyond help with foot and car traffic. The only thing the subway does is the convenience on people coming and going with out having to wait in traffic. South Beach is one of those places that are beyond help.

The LA mass transit has been known for it's car accidents and hitting people who don't even see the streetcar.

The reason you would think because it works for Portland that it would work for Miami? You seriously think that they have to deal with the same foot and car traffic Miami has?

Don't get me wrong I am a fan of mass transit just not the streetcar. The only solution for places like Miami, Chicago, Boston and NYC other cities with great mas transit is to keep the mass transit off the street. My question is to you is do you think that an elevated monorail would suite Miami Beach better?

The point: azure waters, the historic Mediterranean and Art Deco architecture, and the beautiful sunsets. Cars? I'll pass. One can drive a Lamborghini in Tulsa or Dayton.

who's actually gonna use that besides tourists? if miami needs public transit at least have miami put their money to something worth while. if im on south beach, the last thing i need to do is take a streetcar to see a sunset or art deco architecture

While I understand that it may be harder for you to pick up your "Latina" girlfriends without a car at your disposal, you should understand that a streetcar will provide an efficient way to travel north-south on the island; it's an amenity that would be used by residents and tourists alike. If Miami had better public transportation, not so many people would have to throw away $400-$1000 per month on car-related expenses. And maybe this will hit home with you, Mr. UM: you could drink all you wanted and not have to worry about driving home or finding a designated driver. I find that going out in Miami is a pain because of this necessity.

i love how you try to take little shots at me because i dont agree with you. not my fault i think latina girls are cute.. but for that matter i have an indian girlfriend and couldnt be happier. plus, i agree that better public transit is necessary... but to waste money on a streetcar to go up and down miami beach is just useless. take the 25 cent bus for crying out loud. and being "mr. UM" i'm usually busy studying

Oh God this is why you can't have a debate when some poster starts of the subject with the term "Socialism! Moderator cut: Personal Attack, watch it!
Baylink was the perfect solution to getting Metrorail from downtown to South Beach but Mayor Dermer shot that down a few years ago even though many beach residents supported it back in 2002 when the 1/2 penny sales tax was on the ballot.
Even with one Metrorail stop on South Beach, a street car system could then interact and provide an efficient way of moving around Miami Beach.

For the record, Los Angeles currently does NOT have streetcars...it DOES have a SUBWAY and LIGHT RAIL. The City is CONSIDERING a streetcar for moving people WITHIN the Downtown LA area.

Like I said in an earlier post, MIAMI BEACH is a DENSE community at roughly 12,500 persons per square mile (not counting hotel rooms). A Mass Transit option (whatever the technology) is very FEASIBLE.

I happen to agree that an at-grade (streetcar) option is NOT THE IDEAL MODE (i.e., competition with existing street taffic is problematic).

Safety concerns of surface rail are overblown.....as more people have DIED in CAR ACCIDENTS in the USA than in ALL OUR WARS COMBINED.
