Actually MSA are based of off just that, economic significance. They are based off of areas where people live, work and play and therefore spend money. There are tens of thousands of people who work in the city of Miami who do not live in the city of Miami. Where did you think all the traffic was coming from.

Again this is exactly what an MSA does. You look at a core city in the middle and then create a circle around that city that spans out and then incorporate all the areas that are within driving distance by looking at the people who commute and do business within that area.

By the way I have a friend that lives in Plantation in Ft. Lauderdale and it takes her about 30 mins without traffic and about 1 hour during rush hour to commute to downtown Miami.

Just because you don't want to commute doesn't mean other don't. Again the major traffic is going IN to downtown during the morning which is from everyone in those areas that you don't consider the city of Miami and then OUT from downtown after work which is everyone leaving downtown to head back home.

If you think there are only 400k people with a 1 hour drive of downtown Miami the you have no ideal what you are talking about.

I am saying that Mia ,MSA or whatever , is not suitable for a budget busting event...

Mia doesn't need more exposure,it needs to attract high income tourists,as it does today...

You clearly though there were only 400k people in the area. And if Atlanta seemed to break even why not Miami. Considering the populations between the two are very similar with the Miami area being slightly larger.

You also have no clear understanding about how the budget for the Olympics are submitted. Which is done in 3 categories.

Category 1 is the direct budget for overing costs like the athlete's village, transportation and the opening ceremonies. Most cities claim an operating profit for this category.

Category 2 is the budget for sports venues and small transportation systems for cities that lack the basics in those areas. This is where most cities lose money because the build huge expensive stadiums that aren't used for anything else after the Olympics is over.

Category 3 is for huge infrastructure projects like new highways and airport upgrades that are intended to bring benefits that last way beyond the Olympics. These bring value to the areas for years to come.

The actual city that made the most money was Los Angeles during the 1984 Olympics where they made $200 million and that was because they already had plenty of stadiums, arenas, roads, etc. to utilize.

***MOD CUT***

As for the Olympics, after doing some research of Miami venues, it's looking to me like it's very possible and would have a great impact on the city. I'll publish my findings soon.
