Sweetwater

There's nothing "sweet" about Sweetwater.

Paved lawns and burglar bars, almost exclusively Hispanic, very bland, very little to do, but on the other hand, easily one of the safest areas in Miami. Mainly just a sleepy, immigrant-oriented suburb.

Like 98% Hispanic, and not the ubiquitous Coral Gables white Cuban types... Lots of Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, and nowadays Mexicans... totally a dump of a city, and a disgrace to what Mitch Madique tried to build at FIU the last 20 years...

Probably 50%+ of Sweetwater residents are semi citizens that fit into some gray area of immigration status...Most have no intention of ever learning English.

Take as many classes as you can in the Biscayne Campus, it's a bit nicer.

Not really. The 163rd street corridor is like a more ghettoized, Caribe dominated 40th street/Bird Rd. $9.99 shoe stores abound, and the bus stops kill any traffic flow, even in the off hours... Commuting there is treacherous and unpredictable, and the FIU bus takes twice as long to get there as a shrewd Miami driver like myself. Miss the bus, miss the test.

Student housing there sucks, and with only a handfull of apartments and no "walk-to" communities anywhere near North Campus, it is a perfect example of poor planning and mismanagement.

Both campuses are very far apart from each other. I'm not an FIU expert, but the campus by Sweetwater is their main location, so I would think you will have more class availability there. Some posters here like to blow things out of proportion so let me warn you. Yes it is a middle/low class hispanic neighborhood, but it is safe, and by no means a dump. It's not like you gonna find a bunch of "jornaleros" by FIU campus looking for work or Colombian drug dealers looking for clients in the area. Contrary to popular belief, the area is still mainly Cuban, just like most areas in Miami. What you will encounter is some hispanics who don't speak English in that area.

For housing, you will have a lot of options, what's your budget?
