Miami didn't get started til POST-Civil War America, MEANING that the city was up for grabs and didn't have an established culture, MEANING anyone could've came in and brought there culture with them. And the woman who founded this city was a Northerner herself.
It's original culture is what ever was dominant after it was settled........

I'm not arguing whether it's southern or not as a whole.

Also, most whites in the area are descendents of Spanish, German, or French (in that order) settlers or Sicilian and Irish immigrants vs southern whites.
Therfore most last names in NO are Spanish, French, or Italian.

The southerners may have been non-native, but they played a larger role along with the caribbeans of founding the initial culture since nothing dominant was really there.
This is somewhat the same case with Miami.

just to jump in I think Miami and New Orleans both have a unique culture that is somewhat foriegn. However at the end of the day they are US cities and they are in the south. if a 3 million mexicans moved to Houston or Dallas in the next decade they would certainly have a mexican culture and if 2 million africans moved to Atlanta it would have a strong african culture, but they will still be southern cities.

What other then geography makes something southern? Anything else is just subjective and stereotyping.

Yeah, I was referring to Miami.
Look Polo, this is what I'm trying to say.

If you can make the case that Miami isn't southern then you can make an equally strong case that New Orleans and a few other places aren't either. I'm trying to get people to see that it's all coming down to what the people in those places want to identify with (in Miami's case, the majority) vs. what really is there or what originated there.

IMHO, the AA culture in Miami is much stronger than any culture in NO and it has every reason to be since it actually originated from the south. Cultures adapt, but they never loose their base.

The dominate Culture today in 2010 is the Diverse Latino Community.. Thats the Dominate culture of Miami... Your trying to go back in time to present something that has nothing to do with todays time... If you look at the demographics... Today New Orleans will be considered more Southern than Miami... These present day Haitans Creole etc that your throwing out there do not have strong presences in New Orleans.. These people are decendants from a generation from years and years ago.. Some of them probably dont even know where they came from. They just know there from New Orleans.... Why is it that over 60 percent of New orleans population is African american..

Here is something from the Census regarding Miami Dade
