It shouldn't even be up for debate.

Miami is only Southern geographically. Like comparing apples and oranges to call it Southern culturally though. Having been born in Miami myself and lived just north of Orlando too for seven years, culturally speaking the Southern culture isn't present at all until the more northern parts of Florida. It's there in cities like Gainesville and Tallahassee.

Sorry deboinair, but I'm confused. I get the part you wrote about "bible thumping and sweet tea drinking phonies" but the part about "Miami is a third world city" I don't understand. Do you mean Miami has become a place rampant with a lot of homelessness, people living under bridges and overpasses? I haven't lived there since the 1990s, which is why I'm asking if this is what you are saying.

As far as the other descriptions you've used, I have experienced this and more not so pleasant experiences living in North Carolina. Having grown up in Miami, we didn't have all that "Bible thumping" there. People respected whatever your faith denomination was. Here, when I've told them I'm Catholic, they don't leave it at that. I've had several people trying to "convert" me by the usual "You'll have to come to my church with me sometime," thing. And of course, the "sweet tea" analogy you used I've seen too. Southern hospitality doesn't equate to sincerity by any means. And like elchevere said, yeah, no Confederate flags in Miami too.

Miami's a dump.. Anyone who had a clue (you know, the people who drink sweet tea and southern accents) left a long time ago. And to NC many of them went, to enjoy prettier scenery, friendly people, the mountains, the seasons, among other things.

Friendly as long as you are white christian and conservative. And there are dumpy towns all over other parts of the south as well.

Also Miami beach is in no way a dump.
