My oldest will be six years old in a few months. He adores trains and I would like to surprise him with a train ride on his birthday.
Other then Amtrak, I'm not familiar with any down here.
Can y'all help me out? Where in lower MI can a family take a ride on a real train? Thank you

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn has an old steam engine that runs around the museum grounds. Just the right kind of train for kids.

Crossroads Village in Flint operates the Huckleberry Railroad. It is about a 40 -45 minute ride compared to a 20 minute ride at Greenfield Village. Thomas the Tank Engine will be visiting Crossroads Village in August.

Here is a link to their homepage. There is a link to Thomas there.

The Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso frequently has steam or diesel excursions for the public. At Christmas you can take a ride on the North Pole Express.

No train, but, take him to the Air Park in Kazoo. You can take a ride on the Ford Tri-Motor over the countryside. Well worth the time spent, young and old.

There is a tourist train that runs in the Coopersville area. Might be perfect: Coopersville & Marne Ry.

If you do come up this way, there is also the Durand Depot (where I grew up) which is also a museum.
Durand Depot

and the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso, which is about 10 min. west of Owosso. (near where I live now) Very cool things at these places, and Owosso is where the 1225 resides. (as seen in The Polar Express)

You grew up in Durand? My parents and I would often take a ride over there from Flint when I was a kid in the 50s and 60s, to watch the trains.

We toured the museum in the station three summers ago, and last summer we took in the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso.

I played golf numerous times at Dutch Hollow GC in Durand, and Corunna Hills was one of my favorite courses. If we had stayed in Michigan, I thought it would be nice to have a house overlooking Corunna Hills.
