Besides looking in the yellow pages or personal recommendation, any idea how to find a decent certified public accountant? I don't want to go to HR Block.

Thanks

Among my professional network, I've heard positive recommendations for Weidmayer Schneider Raham & Bennett on Maple Rd in Ann Arbor. I don't use them personally, as I work in a tax-related field and do my own taxes.

If you are searching for an accountant for tax preparation, I suggest someone with a CPA or EA (Enrolled Agent) designation. I had an EA designation, but it's now inactive. If you have a complicated tax situation (such as an estate or trust), be sure they have experience in that area. For personal 1040 returns, some accountants will have a lengthy appointment with you and prepare the return as you sit there. Other accountants will have you drop off your paperwork and they call you when the return is ready to pick up. They know what they are doing, so it's usually a waste of time to sit through a lengthy appointment. See if the accountant has been electronically filing returns for several years so they have likely developed an efficient process and know how to minimize electronic filing errors (next year there is an IRS mandate for virtually all paid preparers to electronically file). Some accountants have embraced technology more than others, so they will offer services like electronic access to your final tax return (in case you need it for future reference, or to send to a mortgage broker, for example). Most accounting firms won't be able to quote you an exact price without knowing your situation, but many have a minimum charge for returns. If you call you call around, ask them about their minimum charge.
