Budget Travel Magazine has selected one of my favorite places on Earth, the lake shore town of Leland (up on the Leelanau Peninsula -little finger of Michigan) as one of the 8 Best Lake Towns for 2010.
These folks know what they're talking about. It's on a narrow isthmus between Lake Leelanau and Lake Michigan, with the Leland River running right thru the middle of town. Beautiful water is everywhere and the small-town charm, great restaurant and shops are a bonus. Not to mention the cool new harbor and Historic Fishtown.

Gotta hit the wineries in the area.

A definite "MUST SEE."

And "drink", ifya know what I mean.

Came away with a couple of bottles myself, and technically.....I'm not a wine drinker. But the booze they had to offer was pretty darn good.

Our next vacation in MI will most likely permit our "base" to be in Leland. With family in T.C., the Dunes, et al.....a good place to be. Easy drive to some neat places, sans wine of course.

A good place to start planning the winery visits: www.lpwines.com
My personal favorites are Willow (very small, wonderful wines), Chateau Fontaine, L Mawby (sparkling wines only), and for the whole agri-tourism package: Black Star Farms. They do wine, distilled brandies, and have a creamery that produces nationally award-winning Raclette cheese
All We Can Eat - Say Cheese: Raclette Born in the USA
Some wine, a wedge of raclette or fromage blanc, a loaf of artisanal Stone House bread...my idea of the great lunch in Leelanau.

A day in the new Leland Harbor. Man, it's nice....

These pics are from the wonderful www.Lelandreport.com , one man's blog with photos, expressing his love and excitement for this magical place, along with comments from some of over 5,000 subscribers from all over the world. Amazing that so many people know this little town. You can search years of photos, from almost every day of the year. Check it out!
