Hello out there, I discovered this website through a pretty random search so I have no idea what to expect.

I am traveling for business out to Battle Creek, MI in mid-July, and was hoping that I'd get some tips and ideas on what to do and where to go in my free time. I don't need something crazy exciting necessarily, just trying to avoid the movies with commercials in my hotel room.

Let me know if you have any suggestions, thanks.

The 2010 Marshall Blues Festival is in downtown Marshall (go east on I-94 and follow the signs) on July 17th. Check out the website:

I'm sure once you get there the hotel employees and other people can give you ideas.
There is a new Casino east of town on I-94
There's lots of golf
There is Fort Custer State park (west), you won't have camping gear but its a nice place for a walk. There is also good mountain bike trails if your into that maybe you could rent a bike. Same with canoeing or kayaking, if you could rent you could get on the Kalamazoo river down in Augusta or one of the lakes.
I would pick up some of the local free flyer type newspapers and see if there's anything - maybe a balloon ride.
Personally I find all zoos depressing and won't go to any. I hear good things about Binder Park Zoo if your into that
I heard Barn Theater might have had financial trouble but if it opened I would definately go - great place to take in a professional production with a great after show in the separate little bar. A little pricey maybe.
I think Gull lake (Richland) used to have some sort of boat ride?
Some of the counties around may be having their county fairs

Go to Kellogg's....a great way to spend some time in BC. The tour is interesting, watch the movie first. You can even get your picture printed on your favorite ceral box !.... After that there is the mall...not much else in Battle Creek.

"Cereal City" has been closed for some time now, I know they opened Cereal City when they had to stop giving the real factory tours. You might want to check to see if they resumed factory tours.

If you have some time during the day I would recommend the Gilmore Car Museum (world class), on M-43 just north of Gull Lake. Also drive to Kalamazoo and take in the Air Zoo...Outstanding! Both have good websites with directions and information.

Strange I never thought about the CCCA/Gilmore museum, guess the forest for the trees thing. I enjoyed my involvement in the facility over the years, as well as bringing my own cars to the CCCA events . I was active in the CCCA Foundation,a volunteer and a donor... it is a great place to visit...more than once.

These are all great suggestions! (Cereal City is closed and cereal tours are no longer available). However, there is a great deal to do! Where are you staying in Battle Creek? If you are staying downtown, there is a lot of history in the area including: the Underground Railroad Monument, the Kellogg House, the Sojourner Truth Monument and etc.) There is also the Dr. John Harvey Kellogg Discovery Center and the Historic Seventh Day Adventist Village; this is a great attraction to discover the history of the community. FireKeepers Casino does have a few concerts and events coming up in July and it is just a quick stop off of I-94. Official Battle Creek/Calhoun County Convention & Visitors Bureau Michigan provides a complete listing of upcoming events and attraction and restaurant listings that should also help you to find something to do outside of your hotel room.

I agree with the AirZoo in Kalamazoo. Unless it's changed from February, admission is free (donations appreciated).
If you are there on a weekend you can google "Silver Leaf Renaissance Faire", they are close by. I haven't actually been to one of theirs yet but it's on my to-do list for the month, recommended by a coworker.

I've driven by the Gilmore Car museum a hundred times but haven't stopped in yet.....
