Hello everyone. My husband and I are looking for a house with acreage in the city of Williamston, MI. I would like it to be in the Williamston School District, if possible. He works in Grand Rapids, and unfortunately, I'm going to have to commute to Detroit. Williamston appears to be almost the exact halfway point between the two cities. We are looking for a house on about 10 acres. I've scoured all the obvious websites, but thought there might be someone out there who is thinking about selling sometime this spring or summer (2011). Thanks.

I have lived in/near Williamston, with some years out, since 1965. Could you be a bit clearer as to your needs: Do you need 10 acres because you have large animals? How large a house are you hoping for and how old a house would be acceptable to you? How far out from town would be too far? How high an asking price would be too high? Would you object to working with a Realtor? I'm not one but know a couple of honest ones.

That's a lot of drivin'....

About 80 mi from Motown and GR is about 90....holy cow!

You must really dig Williamston.

Together.....that's 30 hours per week in the car.

Ditto!

OP - it would be a lot easier to know if you need the acreage because of animals, or you want wooded, or just open with no animal facilities. For example, if you were looking for horse facilities, I could refer you to several horse related classified ad sites.

You might have some luck on Zillow - Real Estate, Homes for Sale & Real Estate Values or Trulia - Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Sold Properties, Apartments for Rent

I don't have any specific info for you, but Williamston is a really nice little town. I think you will like it. I would love to live on 10 acres in that area! The surrounding countryside is nice too. I think it is fairly expensive by Michigan standards, though, as there seems to be a lot of MSU/Lansing money that has trickled out that way.

Those are killer commutes. The construction and general traffic on I-96 is going to make things worse than you likely imagine. Dont forget the winter storms that will be upon us soon. When you consider the fuel cost, the wear and tear on your car and your lost time, it may make sense for one of you to quit your job so you can commit either to GR, or the southeast part of the state. Eventually the one who quit would find something in whichever town you choose. That commute could make both of you miserable. I live in the middle of the state and know of people who commute to GR and to Detroit area from here. (both towns are about 90 miles away) These people ALWAYS complain about the commute and how much of thier life is wasted in traffic. I would really think about it before I bought a house and committed to that lifestyle.

Hi everyone. I very much appreciate all of your comments.

I work for the Federal Govt., and my husband works for a big company in Grand Rapids, so unfortunately, quitting either of our jobs is just not an option. I tried to get a job in Grand Rapids, but the employees are there until retirement, so I'll just wait. I've done the exact mileage to both of our work locations, and for both of us, it will be under 75 miles one way if we live in Williamston. I have checked all the sites that Chance2jump listed, above.

We are looking under the $350k range, but it needs to be within the city limits of Williamston. We have a realtor, but I'm trying to find someone who possibly took their house off the market due to it not selling. We would definitely consider renting, as well. We don't have animals yet, but are interested in getting chickens, rabbits and goats someday. We just like country living better than city living.

I commuted for 90 minutes one way while working nights for a year, driving in the snow, and it was miserable. I'm really not looking forward to it. But, hey, what you do for love, right? Thanks again, everyone.
