The coaching ability may help, but not much. I teach in a smaller district in Southern Michigan. All areas of Michigan are being hit by the severe education budget crisis and it isn't going to get better. We are faced with layoffs, larger class sizes, and increased expectations without supplies every year. I wish I could paint a brighter picture. Interestingly enough, we were just looking at relocating to the Raleigh area. We decided not to based on how their educational situation was looking. Sounds like we made a good choice.

@Small town MI mom: After teaching in Michigan, you would probably cry when you got your first check in NC. The cost of living is about the same, from what I can tell, but the pay sure is different. Even with cuts, you guys are making considerably more than NC teachers. I like the Raleigh area, the Charlotte area, and even the Greensboro/ Winston Salem area. If we could live and work in a state where we could get ahead for a while, we would probably move back here to one of those places. The bottom line is that my student loans total more than my salary as an 8 year teacher with a MA degree. I can't afford to stay here making so little money.
