Hi everyone

I am an international student from Bangladesh.I might join MTU in fall 2010 to do my MS in Civil Engineering.

However I was just wondering how the place is for a female international student such as safety, cost of living etc.

It says at the department website that most of the graduate students receive some sort of financial help from the department. However, I have not been offered anything yet. is there a chance that I might manage something after one semester?

Everyone is saying its a great school and all that. However, since my parents will be paying for my study in US,and its a lot of money in my local currency:S... is MTU worth spending for?

Thanks

I just graduated from MTU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

"However I was just wondering how the place is for a female international student such as safety, cost of living etc."

MTU and the surrounding area is very safe. I am a man, but I would not feel unsafe walking around at night. Plus, there are many international students that go to MTU for there undergrad and even more for there masters. You will fit right in. The cost of living in Houghton is VERY cheap, if you share a room with other students you can get the monthly rent below $200 per month.

I am not too sure about your question with financial aid since I was involved in the Mechanical Engineering and not civil, but I would contact the department adviser for civil engineering for more information on funding. They might be able to find a professor you could work for. In most cases they will not just give you money to go to MTU for gradschool. In order to get financial assistance you need to be doing research for a professor or working as a teaching assistant.

I personally thought it was a great school! But the winters are very long, cold and snowy. If you never have seen snow before you will be in for a surprise. The keweenaw peninsula probably gets more snow that many of the states in the Rocky mountains. The winters also last about 9 months.

The Houghton-Hancock area is extremely safe. You will have nothing to worry about as far as crime goes. Your biggest fear is going to be the extreme cold weather. I have lived in the eastern Upper Peninsula of MI and winter gets interesting.

I graduated from MSU with a BS in Civil Engineering (Geo-technical) sometime back, and I have since hired on interns from MTU, and from what I have seen I am impressed. I definitely think that it is worth the money. You will love Houghton during the warmer months. It's a laid back town, and there is a surprising amount of things to do.

I would go for it if I were you, but that is just my opinion. Either way, good luck in your endeavors.
