I'm going to working be in Warren for only 1 month for a short-term project assignment. My contracting company is located in Troy. I am not at all familar with Michigan traffic. According to Google, it's just a 12 mile difference between where my contracting company is located in Troy to were I'll be working in Warren. To me, that's not a big deal at all, but the local project manager said that I wouldn't want to drive in "all that traffic". Is there really traffic between Troy and Warren? I'm come from the DC metro area, so 12 miles is nothing in my opinion.

Should I lodge in Troy or in Warren? Also, what is there to do in the Troy/Warren area during the weekends? I went to TripAdvisor, but didn't find much. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Traffic can be rough to native Michiganders, but I've lived in LA and Chicago, so I don't think the Detroit traffic is too bad in comparison.

Anyways, I assume you will be looking for a Residence Inn type place for a month?

I don't think there's much going on in Warren. Maybe you should look in the Royal Oak area (in between the two), as that's where there is night life (if you're into that).

As far as stuff to do, Greenfield Village, Greek Town / Casinos, Windsor perhaps? A Tiger game would be fun. Canterbury Village in Lake Orion (that's where I'm from) is a year round Christmas village.

Note, I haven't lived in MI since 1998 but get back a few times a year. I will actually probably move back (from San Diego of all places!) to MI this Summer probably. My choice will be between the UP and the LP.

Good luck to us both!

Thanks! I just landed in MI today. I'm staying in Troy because my manager said Warren isn't too safe during the evenings. I plan to check out Ann Arbor, Canada, and a couple of other places during my weekends here. However, I have no idea what to do with my free time from M to F after work. Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll definitely look into it.

Are there any meetup.org type outings in Troy? Even though I'm here for only a month, it would be great to meet some new friends (even if it is just temporary) while I'm here. Or maybe I'm asking for too much. I'm not sure if folks are friendly to an outsider. I guess I'll find out.
