I am taking my grandchildren, for the first time ,to climb the dunes and look for Petoskey stones but have no idea where to go close to the dunes. Can anyone give suggestions? Also will be in Traverse City, if that is a good area to hunt stones.

I believe you can only find Petosky stones near Petosky, and there are not a whole lot of cool stones near the Dunes. The best stones by far are on Lake Superior shores.

I don't remember finding Petoskey stones around Sleeping Bear, but there are plenty in Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim and Emmet. I worked many years at the CVB in Traverse City and used to recommend Peterson Park - MyParkPhotos.com, The Best Photography Community for Friends of Public Lands in Northport (at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula) all the time to people wanting to go hunting for Petoskey Stones. I've never seen the place crowded and there are tons of stones. Now, make sure you either are willing to spit on stones, or carry a spray bottle to get them wet if you are in an area where the stones are dry. You can look in the water too, but I'd wear water shoes as all those little stones sure can hurt your feet!

You can find them on Lake Michigan Beach in Charlevoix.........I have found a ton. I also find them in my driveway when we get a fresh load of gravel!

I can't remember the last time I found one on a beach, it seems like it is always so picked over. But I usually find them in loads of gravel.
