My 23 yr. old daughter may be moving to Lansing for her job. She was looking at apartments in the Lansing area. She would like to live in a complex so she can meet new people, preferably people her own age. Should she look right in the Lansing or are the areas outside of Lansing better? She would be working on Pennsylvania Ave. She doesn't want too much of a drive, but some people have told her Okemos or Holt, etc. areas would be better than right in Lansing. She is looking for something around $700 a month. Any opinions?

Default Outside Lansing, Probably

Not that Lansing itself is not safe, but with a budget of $700 your daughter can likely find better accommodations outside of the city . . . and also closer to people her own age. Unless she wants the college party atmosphere, probably best to stay away from East Lansing, but there are some apartments off Jolly road near 496/127 that might fit the bill.

Also, Holt is literally at the end of Pennsylvania Ave, so it is not that far from where she would work, depending on what the address is. Assuming she is working at the South end of Lansing, many communities (including Okemos and Grand Ledge) are not that far a drive down I-96. There are some very nice apartments on the west side of Lansing on Canal between Saginaw and St. Joe that would be about 15 minutes away.

Just a suggestion: It might be best for her to pay to stay at some kind of extended stay hotel for a week or so and drive around to get to know the area before signing a lease. Nothing worse than signing a long lease and finding out you hate the place and are stuck there.
