Any help on where we could stay where we would be able to have a open fire and camp out for a few days without being bugged, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.
You mean "bugged" by other campers or what? How much isolation do you require?
Most of the Recreation Areas have extensive trail systems, but the campgrounds will be popular.
Forgot - some State Game Areas have rustic campgrounds with spotty attendance.
DNR - State Game/Wildlife Areas - listed by name

We would like to be able to just hike until we were tired and then just set up camp whenever. I know this may not be possible in lower MI, especially now that I am looking more into it. Are there any good places where you can set up camp anywhere? Without the fire rings and that type of thing. We would just like something to be able to just go out and not run into too many people there will be about 6 of us going, if that matters. It's just kind of hard to narrow down a good place with all that we like. From what I have read it seems like North Manitou Island sounds like it could be the best option. Thanks again for the replies.

That helps, you need off-trail camping. Yeah, there are places in lower Michigan, Check Hodenpyl Pond area - I believe the North Country Trail runs through there.

BTW most of the trail is wilder than the picture shown in the first link.

To elaborate on my previous post, looks like camping is allowed along any hiking trail in state, national forests, and some state game areas. Most have extensive trails.
Re. state forests:
Quote:
Undesignated/Dispersed Camping
Dispersed Camp Fee:
No charge
Dispersed camping is allowed on State Forest land, if the camp is one mile from a designated state forest campground and it has not been banned by Order of the Director. Campers must post a camp registration card at their campsite. Camp registration cards may be obtained at any DNR Operation Service Center or from the Forest, Mineral, and Fire Management Office in Lansing. (Note: dispersed camping is also allowed on a limited basis within State Game Areas. For more information call Wildlife Division).
