...... but I have never been to the Thumb area of MI.
That's one of my favorite parts of Michigan! (definitely underrated)

I went several times when I lived in the area, but I have met many people from the Grand Rapids area, and the mid-michigan area (and the thumb) etc...who have never set foot in the Detroit area, or the city itself. Some only go for Tigers' games. It is interesting because now that I live across the country, everyone here thinks Michigan = Detroit and are shocked when I tell them Michigan has other cities too..and Detroit isn't even the capital!

ETA I have never been in the thumb (I would like to at some point, just because, why not??) and I have only been to the area of the UP just across the bridge--but I have been to northern/mid/western MI many times.

I could probably count on two hands the amount of times I've been to Detroit, and I'm only 2 hours from there. All but one of the times was for Red Wings games. The other was to go to the zoo with my fiancee. Just no reason for me to waste the gas money to go there very frequently.

And I've only been to Greenfield village once when I was really young.

Although, on the flip side, I've only been to Grand Rapids maybe three times, all of those times in the suburbs that aren't really Grand Rapids.

Honestly, you're not missing much. There is absolutely NOTHING in the thumb, except for a few beaches that aren't all that great. Just flat farmland for as far as the eye can see, and a lot of Michigan Militia.

I'm sure others here would say different.
I've had no intrest in visiting the thumb, until I seen pictures of it on this forum

Hey! Some of us like farm scenery. As far as farm country goes, the Thumb has some of the nicest. I also like the little towns along like Huron.

I advise people to come to Detroit. So content while riding my bicycle on Bell Isle or the riverwalk. The Dequindre cut is also a lovely place to view art while bicycling/running/jogging. I'm going to do a lot of mid-town this summer.

Neither the Zoo, nor Greenfield Villiage are in Detroit. If you get a chance come visit sometime. It is not bad to come for a weekend getaway. Look through these threads and you will find all kinds of awesome things to do and places to eat. It is really a neat city, at least downtown and midtown anyway. Come down for the fireworks sometimes. It is amazing. Or for one of the music festivals. Or airplane or boat races on the river. Lots of neat reasons to come for a weekend. Take one of the tours of the city, you will be amazed by the history of what happened here and the beautiful architecture.
