We are potentially moving to the Portage area with three young children 5 and under from the Philadelphia suburbs. I'm looking for suggestions on places to live, private schools (one of my children needs to be in a small but rigorous academic setting), nice homes, nice downtown area, lots of outdoor and kids sports/play space, etc. Please help!

There is nothing special about Portage, MI. It is an average, safe suburb and feels more like a southern continuation of Kalamazoo as it has no downtown and little community feel, unless walking around the mall is what you are shooting for. I personally don't see why people don't choose Kalamazoo over it, as it is much more interesting and community like. Downtown Kalamazoo is actually cool and on the up, though unless you live immediately near it, you will probably have to drive there regardless on where you live. School safety and quality of education are perceivably better in Portage, but I think that is bogus after my experience there (though I only went to HS there).

If you don't want to live in Kalamazoo, I would still pass on Portage, Texas, Oshtemo, Mattawan, and look at Richland, Schoolcraft and Vicksburg for that small town/suburb feel with a quaint downtown, community feel and great schools. G'luck!

Thank you...I will definitely check out the schools and the other towns.
Are there any private schools that are not parish schools? I would consider any school within 20ish minutes from Kzoo.
