Hi All,
I am getting a job in Weidman, MI. I am moving to Michigan with my wife and a year old baby. What would be a good place to stay nearby? Important factors for us are safety, proximity to work and access to good grocery shopping. Nice to have are parks nearby. Also how are the winters there (I am currently living in Cincinnati , OH) ? Are roads cleared soon after snow? Do I need a 4 wheel drive?
TIA

For anyone who hasn't heard of Wiedman (I had to look it up) it's kind of between Mount Pleasant and Clare, two places I've only really passed through on the way Up North.

You should probably focus on finding a place to live in or near Mount Pleasant, since that is the closest "civilization" to Weidman. You will definitely get more snow than Cincinnati, but not a ridiculous amount. That part of the state tends to miss out on most of the lake effect snow, so you can probably expect 40-50 inches of snow in a normal winter. The roads are cleared fairly quickly. You can probably get by with just a front wheel drive car MOST of the time. There will be a few days during the winter where a lack of 4 wheel drive might prevent you from going on the roads, but it will just be during/after big storms, which aren't a constant thing. Outside of lake effect snow belts, it is pretty rare in most of Michigan to get a snow storm of 12-plus inches. You will see quite a few days with snowfall of 1, 2, 3, 4 inches, etc. If it is windy, the back roads can get bad even when it isn't snowing, due to blowing and drifting snow coming across the open fields.

I would also say look in Mt Pleasant. It'll have all of your stores and the commute to Weidman isn't too long. The village of Lake Isabella is a nice little neighborhood too. Much closer to Weidman, but on the flip side you'd be commuting for groceries.

Weidman has an IGA grocery store. Are you looking to buy or rent? Lake Isabella is a nice area and convenient to work.

Weidman is the home of the famous, "Incredible Dr. Pol" (National Geographic Wild program on Saturday nights at 9pm). He's a veterinarian. An incredible veterinarian.
