Please help! My son is getting married next May (2011) and his fiance has asked me to help her with wedding/reception venue ideas. They want a facility that has an outdoor option for the ceremony, with an indoor "plan B." They would like trees, hills, and water in some form. The reception facility could also be close by, if it is not part of the wedding venue. Maximum 100 people. They do not want a hotel reception, but a reception hall is OK. It could be anywhere in MI, but I would suspect the Lower would be more convenient. Can you suggest some venues?

Been to many weddings over the years...below are 2 that stood out:

My wife's cousin had their wedding and reception last summer at a northern Michigan campground. It was a laid back affair with a pig roast! It was held at a outdoor pavillion. Some guests stayed at the campground while others stayed at the hotel down the road.

Back in 2001, my cousin had her reception at Orchard Lake Country Club. It was set up outside but the venue could be moved indoors if needed to.

There are lot of options here...the campground was a cheap wedding with a keg of beer, maybe $20 per person. The Orchard Lake reception had 6 course meals with booze flowly freely all day. It probably cost an upwards of $250 to $300 per person.

What's the budget and where did the happy couple come from?

I don't think the budget is an issue, but the bride is very practical, so I don't think they will go overboard on the budget. Probably somewhere between your 2 scenarios. We are from MI, and her family is from PA, so we are looking in both places. I, of course, am partial to MI

AN update: my son and his fiance have narrowed their wedding ceremony location to the Traverse City area. Now they need a reception location in the TC/Petosky/Sleeping Bear area. They want either a lodge/hotel with a reception hall that allows catered food/drinks to be brought in, and can provide the guests with accommodations option, OR just a banquet hall like a K of C that allows food/drinks to be brought in. Nothing terribly fancy. They plan on around 75 guests. Any ideas?

They want to stay under $35 per guest for food. If they can keep that budget, they will consider "in-house" catering. Their total budget for ceremony site/reception is $5,000. They want to either save money by outside catering, a cheaper ceremony site like a park with a building for bad weather, or cheaper lodging in the same area as the reception. They like the Homestead for the ceremony, but can't afford the catering/reception there. They also like the Perry Hotel in Petosky...just to give you an idea of what they want. Is there some kind of lodge with a more rustic, casual feel for the reception in those areas? Maybe even something like a K of C hall?
