We're planning a trip through the Michigan upper peninsula, and wondering about the drive from Marquette to Mackinac Island. We're only going one-way so it would be one route or the other, so is it more scenic/interesting to take a northern route along Lake Superior, or the southern route (probably Route 2) along Lake Michigan?

Both are pretty. If you take US2 in the south, you get the nice views of Lake Michigan and the bridge.

If you go across the north, you get the nice views of Lake Superior! You'll also run across Pictured Rocks and Tequamenon Falls.

Take M28 east from Mqt to Munising (north with some views of lake superior) then take 117 south to US 2 for your Lake Michigan views. Actually this is about the only way you would take from Marquette to the bridge. (M77 will take you south to US 2 also)

Default Marquette to Mackinac Island

I would take M28 east to Shingleton and turn on M94 towards Manistique. Manistique is right on Lake Michigan (US2) and has a beautiful boardwalk along the beach. Then US2 to St. Ignace. There is a lot of beautiful lake views along this route.

This is our preferred route

You really can't go wrong with either route, because you're going to have tremendous views of two beautiful great lakes any way you travel. I've driven both, and I guess the only drawback to the northernmost M28 heading east is that once the highway veers inland a bit, the stretch does seem to go on for awhile.
