Well... I absolutely loved the area! It was even better than I expected. Some of the views overlooking the river are stunning! We checked out Tawas Point State Park and the lighthouse, which was very nice, then drove up to Oscoda and drove west on River Road. All of the overlooks were great, but when we reached the end at M-65, we decided to keep going up to Glennie and then over to Grayling. We actually stumbled onto a really nice overlook on Au Sable Rd, west of Glennie. It might have been my favorite spot on the whole trip!

Thanks to everyone on this forum for all the info. I doubt I would have ever visited the area without seeing pictures on this forum. At least on the west side of the state, no one ever talks about that area. I had never even heard of it before reading this forum. But it's now one of my favorite places in Michigan for sure. Unfortunately the batteries on my camera were dead, so the only pictures we could take were on a friend's camera. I will try to get ahold of the pics and post them some time.

I believe it. It wasn't very busy up there this past weekend, but there were a lot of motorcyclists. Which doesn't really bother me, other than the fact that the super loud Harleys sort of ruin the peacefulness at times. But I got the feeling that it could get rowdy up there on a busy weekend.

Glad you liked it! Actually we go camping near Glennie quite a bit. You might have happened upon Alcona County Park. Its a campground above the Dam, which has caused a small lake....very beautiful!

You were practically on top of one of our favorite campgrounds, Alcona Park. It's in Glennie, located on the AuSable River floodwaters above the Alcona Dam. We'll be camping there in September.

I saw your post right after I posted on the same place. It's definitely one of our favorites.

We'll be there the weekend of the 16th. It'd be very cool if our schedules would match up.

I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience. It could be that you and or your friends were up when the Bike Shop was having their Annual Party. It's a nice event but it does draw a lot of cyclist from across the region. I don't believe they are having another one this year. I think I heard that it wasn't profitable for them the last two events. Anyway, it's not normally like that. Again, sorry to hear about a few disrespectful individuals making it uncomfortable for the families that visit the area.
