I'll be going up to Montague twice this summer (June and August), and I was wondering if anyone happens to know any places in the area to find some cool rocks and minerals. I've been searching online but haven't really pulled up anything, other than the Upper Peninsula being a divine place for rockhounds, but that's no help for right now. So, um, yeah. Any suggestions would be awesome.

Maybe try this. I buy many used books in great shape here. You may not need it for Montague, but it would be great for future excursions! And yes...Superior is king when it comes to rock hunting.

Not very good places for a rock hound around here, but if you get in the "frontal dune" areas along the lake, between dune peaks at the bottom you can sometimes find an outcropping of stones. Some of these have been open for a LONG time and you can make some interesting finds. I found an old hide scraper a couple years ago that had been used by ancient Indians in the area. That was in the Nordhouse Wilderness Dune area, that scraper is now in a museum dated to between 8000 - 12,000 years old. Some years are better than others because in a really dry summer, a few of the Interdunal pools (some call them swales in the area) will dry up and expose their bottoms which can be a real collection of different rocks and stones. Not much for gems, but you can find some nice sized Petoskey stones once in a while. When I was a kid I found one about the size of a Cantaloupe (that one is in a Natural Science museum on a College campus in Maine now.)
