Hey everyone! I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, but...

I've been away from Michigan for a while, and I wondered what you, or people you know, think about Rick Snyder and all the changes he's bringing about. I read mlive quite a bit, and often read the posts under the articles. From what I see, he's got to be the most hated man in Michigan--but he and the GOP were elected in a landslide last November. When I move back I'll be more up on the political scene up there, but I just wondered what people on the ground really are saying about the Governor's policies.

Thanks!
mackinac

He seems to be doing what he said he would do. Too early to tell if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Actually we will not know for years. Maybe never

I have mixed feelings about him. I voted for him, but some of his ideas I'm not too happy with, but I can appreciate his rationale. He seems to have wide support for most issues. He apparently came across pretty strong at the conference up in Mackinac Island last week. It's still a bit too early to give him a grade. And we'll have to grade him "on the curve" due to the poor economy that he "inherited" (to use Obama's excuse).

At least Snyder has a plan. Granhole was clueless. She wanted to tax movie theater popcorn sales to save the state budget - woohoo !

So far he is following right along with what he said he was going to do if elected. That alone is a breath of fresh air. Still too early to say for sure, but I'll give him an A+ for effort and follow through. I don't totally agree with some of the cuts he is proposing and implementing, but I don't have the job of straightening out the fiscal mess the State is in either. It does seem to spread the bite to ALL areas of the budget and not to just the few that couldn't afford the best lobbyists to grease the Gov'n palm.

Exactly.

I voted for him because he is conservative on the social issues, he stands strong for what he believes needs done and doesn't sit on the fence because he is already thinking about which office he wants to run for next and is afraid of making political enemies (which seems to be the case with most politicians), and because I could have never supported Virg Bernero, who just seems like Granholm Lite to me, and didn't seem to have a plan other than to try to keep the powerful unions happy.

I give him a lot of credit for doing things that aren't "politically easy." He made Democrats mad with the emergency financial manager law. He made Democrats AND Republicans mad with the pension tax (I wasn't a huge fan of that idea either). Now he is making Republicans mad with the talk about building a new bridge to Canada. So he really seems to be sticking to his story of being a political newcomer and not being beholden to any party lines.

Summary: He's not perfect, and I don't like some of the details of how he is fixing the state. But anyone who can balance Michigan's budget within 6 months of taking office deserves a lot of credit, and he is giving our government a sense of common sense and stability that we never had under Granholm. We are no longer dysfunctional, and that is half the battle!

For as tough of a job as he has, I think he is giving it a real...honest try. Not just trying to please one side or the other. I am very pleased so far, and dont forget....Michigan is in the top 2 for jobs gained so far. This may or may not be related directly...but it shows positive.
