I'm assuming you're Jewish. A lot of Jews live in Bloomfield Hills and Township, I believe. That's where some synagogues are, anyway. Even with the large population of Arabs and Muslims in metro Detroit, particularly Dearborn, I don't hear much anti-Israel sentiment. I think it is more common in NYC because there are more Jews there and they tend to elicit a greater negative response because they, like most New Yorkers, are more obnoxious.

I grew up in on the west side of Michigan, and I don't think I ever heard one bit of anti-Israel sentiment. In fact, I didn't know what "antisemitism" meant until I was in high school and we started learning about the holocaust. That might sound ridiculous... but where I'm from, people just didn't talk about Jewish people at ALL. Positive or negative. It was just a non-issue (maybe because there was basically zero Jewish population in the area?). So I was always amazed in the movies and on TV when I would hear negative comments about Jewish people, or jokes about Jewish people. I would think, "where does this stuff COME from? Why does anyone care one way or another? How are these people different from anyone else?"

But, then again... I had a pretty sheltered childhood in good ol' West Michigan.

I've lived in SE Michigan for almost ten years and have never once heard anti-Jewish sentiment - and I am "technically" Jewish, with family members living in Israel....I'd remember if I heard anyone talking smack about Jews or Israel or Judaism because that's my family and it would make me mad!

I suppose perhaps any area with a high percentage of Arab Americans, like Dearborn?...but maybe not even there....I may be stereotyping Arab Americans and if so my apologies. In fact I associate with a few and haven't heard them express any anti-Israel or anti-Jewish sentiments.

Bottom line: I sure wouldn't let any of that affect your decision about where to live or go to school...it's certainly not pandemic or pervasive anywhere I have ever lived, although if you look hard enough you'll find bigots no matter where you live.

Don't worry, there is no major source of anti-Israel sentiment because most people, including those of Arab American background have enough decorum to keep their opinions personal. I work in Dearborn and I know most of the people I work with do keep their political opinions to themselves.

However, if you are looking for an environment where Israel fundraising jars sit on shopkeepers counters and the environment is very friendly to those of the Jewish faith, look at the 10 mile and Greenfield areas of Southfield and Oak Park. There are Kosher grocery stores, restaurants, many shuls and a very family friendly atmosphere. I lived at 12 and Greenfield and often shopped in that area due to the wide variety of shops and I can tell you that it is a very nice place to be.

1) Nobody in most of Michigan cares about Israel or Jewish people.

2) Out there? Where is out there? Is it like "way over there" on the East Coast? lol

Any decent college in the country will (a) have students with diverse views, and (b) encourage its students to engage in reasoned debate. If you are unable to recognize that reasonable people can disagree about a problem as complex as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and unwilling to come into contact with people who disagree with you or be exposed to facts that do not support your position, then maybe you should just skip college and pursue a career in the Israeli military.

But if you do decide to go to college, Michigan State U. has a Jewish Studies program.
