Greetings Michiganders,

I was wondering if anyone knew how the job situation in Sault Ste. Marie is in general? And specifically food and beverage: as a bartender. I am thinking about applying for a job on the Bridge but my wife bar tends as a trade.

Matt

While I haven't lived in the Soo for many years, I was just up there taking my daughter to track camp at LSSU. I used to love the Soo, but now I really don't care for the way it has grown. I would, however, imagine that most bartending jobs would be filled by the local college students, at least for some of the year. I may be wrong on this point, but I would think the year-round job situation in the Soo does not have a good outlook.

Yeah, there is nothing here. It is a desolate place with very, very few jobs. I've lived here 3 years, graduated last May, and though I haven't looked the whole time, but I held one job here, and it was for a short amount of time. Almost all of the jobs you can obtain here are part-time, low paying, high turnover, poorly managed companies.

There is no incentive for companies to come here (in fact, some of the few medical/industrial supply companies are losing their tax breaks here shortly and will probably depart), and job growth has been negative before I came here. Unemployment is high (at the time of writing this ~13%), and there really is a feeling that this city--if you can call it that--is on the brink of collapse. The people that live here are either going to school at LSSU (that was me), or working in law enforcement at the prison, border patrol, or state/local police. Other than that, there's no reason to be here.

I don't like to talk poorly of the place, I enjoyed most of my time here. People are friendly, there's quite a bit of outdoor things to do within an hour, hour and a half's drive, the cost of living is lower than anywhere else I've been, and there's a certain quaintness to it. But if you're considering living here, do your homework.

^ I mostly agree with the above. The job situation isn't great, but there are a lot of bars here. If you look long enough, you might be able to find something.
