When does Michigans Winter in the UP really start ?

Hubby & I can't do ice & cold, due to medical reasons.
Hubby wants to come back to MI. me too, mainly the UP this Fall.
We want to check out the leaves on your trees, also. When is your color peak of Fall ?

We could wait for the Spring...just not sure when we should come up there.

Any advice ???

Thanks
You'd prob'ly dig Petoskey stones; neat 'lil fossils they are......

Even in the middle of the summer tourist season, it seems that the Sunrise side is a bit quieter.

Hit or miss with the fall colors......as far as timing is concerned.

YAZ... we stayed in Petoskey 1 night. Hubby found a 3" Petoskey stone in the water in "Leland".
We were told by a MI native that Petoskey stones are only in Petoskey waters.
They are cool, tho.I actually bought a sterling silver Petoskey pendant & earings in Leland. They are very nice.

We really want to go back to the UP...talk about piece & quiet...

I guess I'll have to check out MI rainfall totals.

Here are some ideas about your trip along my favorite LP area - the left coast.
* You may have traveled too fast and missed some good stuff.
* Grand Haven: Chinook Pier channel walk with small shops and restaurants.
* Ludington: lakeshore drive to the state park and the park itself - one of the nicest, and interesting to explore.
* Lake Mich Recreation Area and Nordhouse Wilderness. If you're into primitive areas these actually abut the state park creating an expansive area of dunes and forest for exploring and hiking.
* M-22 stair overlook south to Arcadia.
* Manistee: channel walk behind the shops. Lk Mich beaches.
* Sleeping Bear: The Stocking Drive with elevated overlooks at the lake, a quaint covered bridge.

'GMA' Most Beautiful Places in America: Point Reyes, CA; Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI | Video - ABC News
* Empire: Sleeping Bear area information center. A nice park and beach.
* Leland Fishtown.
* Leelanau and Traverse City: lighthouses and parks at the points.
* Wilderness State Park, true to its name has extensive shoreline.
I like this trip in the Fall.

detwahDJ...

Thank you for your ideas.

When we lived in CA we went to Point Reyes several times.
Beautiful & Majestic doesn't even come close to describing Point Reyes. Everyone should explore this wonderful place. It's one of a kind

Point Reyes seems more rugged and interesting to me. Too bad it's so far away.
BTW I just noticed a new Michigan thread on Fishtown with pictures.
