Hi everyone,

I am moving to Lansing in a few days and was wondering if you guys could help me find a decent place to live. I would be working very close to the MI state Capitol. What neighborhoods should I look at? Safety, close to public transport and walkable - those are my priorities. Of course, as close to work as possible, that certainly will help. I am single, 28, IT Professional.

I'll appreciate any help. Thanks!

In/around the Frandor area would probably be safe, walkable and also a straight shot down Michigan Avenue to work. It's slightly east of the Capitol, and mid point between the capitol and Michigan State University.

Thanks for your reply. Any other neigborhoods that I should explore? How is the public transport in Lansing? Is it advisable to drive to work (not sure what kind of area is the Capitol region) or take the bus?

Driving will not be bad, if you have a regular place to park. Lansing is very easy to navigate. The roads run true parallel and cross streets are true perpendicular. There are some that are one way, but the street over will run the other way. Public transportation is generally very good, but even if you had to pay for parking in a city lot, it might be worth the convenience of having your car for door to door service. There are other nice areas of Lansing~I'm just most familar with the Frandor/Grossbeck area. Slightly North of Lansing is part of East Lansing (Lake Lansing Road/Harrison Road/Coolidge Road areas) and then on the other side of 127 near Eastwood Mall (Wood Street) is Lansing and seems like a nice area. To the south of Lansing (almost to the other side of campus) is Holt, also a nice area. Jolly Road area is full of student housing, may be too much of a party scene. Does your company have a relocation specialist that could steer you in the right direction?

Thanks a bunch for your reply, that certainly help. I will buy a car there, but need to make sure that I'll survive the initial days when I have to rely on the buses. Any particular websites/resources you know where I can hunt for apartments? I tried Craigslist but wasn't a big help. Thanks!

Default Try West Lake Lansing Road

If you want to be close to bus routes, you need to check out the CATA website. Buses do not run west of town past the Eaton County line (with the slight exception of the Lansing Mall) so the west side of town is probably out for you. Would also not suggest the south side of Lansing.

Most buses on the east side run through the Meijer store parking lot off Lake Lansing Road (in East Lansing) or route through there. Not sure where you are working, but you should be able to get to most areas of town from that spot and there are several apartment complexes just east of there. You would be within walking distance of two grocery stores (Meijers and Krogers) a number of restuarants and other services. You would also only a short bus or car trip over the highway (127) to Eastwood Towne Center were there is a book store, movie theaters, restaurants and other stores.

Complexes in that area include Stone Henge, Ashton Lake and Burnt Tree. Can't vouch for any of those myself, but at least you have several choices.

You are also not far from downtown East Lansing and the campus of Michigan State University.

Good luck,

I used the bus for 3 years when I was at MSU. I lived maybe 2 blocks NW of the capitol. The bus system in Lansing is great, considering what it is in other places.

Most apartment complexes in East Lansing, Okemos, and Haslett will be fine and should have good access to CATA buses. If you're a young professional, I'd avoid anything that is between Grand River, Abbot, Burcham, and the MSU campus line to avoid the "student ghetto" and anything in the Chandler Road area (very heavily student-oriented and not always very well built.) In Lansing itself, there are apartment complexes on the southeast side (Trapper's Cove is decent, avoid Dover's Crossing though) that also have good access to CATA. The Frandor area (which some people had recommended) is also a good suggestion. A word of note though is that unless you are in the Grand River corridor along Route 1, the buses will have a final destination of MSU campus and you will need to transfer. I don't think it costs anything.

There are also options within the city of Lansing itself relatively close to downtown. The areas are hit and miss, though, so you might want to check with some people who know the area. It can go from nice to worrisome within a couple of blocks.

The west side of town has a lot of nice apartment complexes, but as mentioned before, it's a public transportation nightmare, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a car.

I wouldn't plan on walking from Frandor to the capitol. It's 2-3 miles, which I consider too far to walk, at least to walk home after a long day's work. You could easily bicycle or take the bus, though.
