I remember the Boblo boat being 'the' party when I was a kid in the city. Cheap, a decent park and closer than Cedar Point. Then it was gone. What happened?

Several things worked against Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park

Cedar Point greatly expanded its line of attractions over the years and gained some of Bob-Lo's loyal customers.

The Bob-Lo boats, once looked upon as part of the attraction of going on a trip to Bob-Lo were later being looked at as time wasted that could have been spent at the park. Over the years, the crowds going to Bob-Lo on the boat would were increasingly loud and rude and some people avoided going to Bob-Lo to avoid the noise.

One year, a new owner put a lot of money to improve the park, only to be hit by a very cold spring - legend has it that three people were in attendance on opening day.

Finally, A young entrepreneur who successfully turned around a floundering amusement park in suburban Seattle bought Bob-Lo hoping to turn it around. He had hoped to build a bridge to Bob-Lo to eliminate the inconvenience of the boat rides, but he did not realize (or appreciate) that Bob-Lo Island was across an international border from Michigan. If I remember correctly, the new owner suffered a bad traffic accident, and his whole empire went bankrupt.

Boblo, the lost history. It was the biggest thing and then just vanished.
