Somewhere where land an taxes are lower, 25 miles or so from town , having a place built is fine also. Do you like the east side vs west side.

I like the middle and the west much better than the eastern U.P.
DH and I will be retiring to the U.P. in a few years. Our place is in Chatham.

I would prefer the west side, but I would take anywhere in the U.P really. The closer to Lake Superior...the better.

Taxes will be higher in cities, like Marquette, the largest and most progressive place in upper mi.there is little reason to move 25 miles away from city services, including health care. I live deep in the woods on a mountain top overlooking Lake Superior and I am only 3 miles from city center. All the benefits ,without high city tax rates. Many folks bought land in a very remote area, because of price, then when it became close to retirement, they see what mistakes were made, for low cost land values.I can't tell you how many made this mistake, many still own this land, and can't sell it. Then they wound up and bought again in a more practial local.. The are several things to consider, not just taxes and health care, like snow removal ,lack of wireless communications and power options. Some of the more remote places do not have electric. The expense to have it piped in can be cost prohibitive . There are few places out side the city where Internet service is not available, and nether is cable. Most go wireless, as long asbyoou are near a tower.

Buy my in-laws' place near Wakefield (west side). Close to Lake Superior, skiing (Indianhead, Powderhorn, Blackjack), waterfalls, hunting/fishing , Lake Gogebic, etc.

On 37 cares with its own stream/pond on the property:

609 Niemala Rd Wakefield MI - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - MLS #1063102 - Realtor.com®

Thank you for your reply and sorry for my late replies. How do you like that area and how are the taxes.

Thanks you.

Now it sounds like you are all set up and close to town. Without all the city hassles. I was looking to build a small 800 sq ft-1500 sq ft cabin, pole barn for retirement on 20 or so acres. It may be cheaper to just buy a place that is already up there. I would like to be off the main Hwy's. Did you drill a well?

Thanks for the info.

Yes, 350 foot, but good water, all rock, no well casing except upper 20 ft. Electric was expensive as I was at the end of the road. About 5,000 400 amp service, real cheat rates. House is all electric.

Thanks, I am just checking out some listing on homes VS buying land and building plus permits. Want to stay out of the city, seen enough of that.

Thank you.

As I said, don't get too far from the city. You will pay more for land or house, but in the end you will be happier. More so if it's your last home and you retire here. There quite a few people that have built cabins in remote places, no power, or anything else, like snow plowing.. Fine for a vacation, not yea round, unless you want to be off the grid and want to live like a hermit. Ok for young folks, great adventure...for a while.
