I heard that the city is planning to have a casino in Lansing downtown and there is a fair amount of resistance from a section of the society. Wondering why is that? Is not it a good plan to have some lively thing going on in a dying downtown??

Reasons to be against: 1. A lot of people are addicted to gambling, 2. A lot of people spend money on gambling when they could/should be spending it on more important things.

Reason to be for: People are going to waste their money anyway, so might as well keep it local.

Some people are opposed to casinos because they believe they will bring in a lot of crime, but this is not the case. Most people don't go to casinos to cause trouble, they go to throw their money away.

Casinos don't really do a whole lot unless there's already something in that downtown. Like the Motor City Casino in Detroit didn't exactly revive the neighborhood it was in. Same with MGM which is still somewhat removed from the core. Both casinos have huge parking garages directly next to the casinos, so people never actually leave the site. Greektown is more or less in a good spot because it's only a few blocks from the stadiums which is really what livened up the area. It also doesn't hurt to actually have people who live in downtown.

But it basically goes back to what Retroit said; all it does is get money for the city of Lansing without having to raise taxes.

Yeah, I doubt it will help downtown all that much.

Like animatedmartian said, people will just park in the parking ramp, waste all of their disposable income in the casino, and then drive back to Howell or wherever.

And I don't think the casino will be paying much to the city in taxes, either (if any), so it's not exactly a revenue source.

The casinos in Detroit pay taxes.

Look at all the benefits Detroit has received from the 3 casinos there.

The Lansing casino would be different. It would be treated more like a tribal casino, and would not pay nearly as much in taxes as the Detroit casinos. Fast Facts: This is not Greektown | Lansing Kewadin Casino

Okay, thanks for the info. There seems to be a contradiction between your article and mine (example: "• Under a new constitutional amendment, all casinos would be taxed at 23% of adjusted gross receipts, higher than the current 19% rate in Detroit")

I'm not a big fan of gambling (though I love going into the casinos for people watching and I love Las Vegas) but I support all these new casinos they want to build around the state. The way I see it, why should three companies benefit? I want to see competition. The Detroit casinos have overpriced food and lodging options and the gambling isn't that good. Competition should loosen the slots a bit.
