Ford: Detroit-Windsor bridge a 'huge boost for us' | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

Canada and the state of Michigan have signed an agreement to build a new connection between the two. Roughly 10,000 jobs will be created. An easy boost to Michigan's economy. Canada will pay a large part of the project and no public funds from Michigan will be used. Win - win for all it seems. Thoughts?

Nothing. Unless Matty wants to 'upgrade it' and ruin a piece of history (or worse, anger the Canadians). Other than that, it'll just be a secondary route.

I love this. Great idea.

I have to laugh at all of the commercials denigrating MI for wanting to build a new bridge (branded as a waste, and posing as a conservative interest group). Funny to find out that the ads were paid for by the family that owns both the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor Tunnel.

Funny how offering an alternate is waste, while fees for crossing have gone nothing but up, up, up for years, all benefiting one family. LOL.

Actually, they don't own the tunnel (thank the lord). It's a joint company between Detroit and Windsor.

But yea, the rest is true. And it really shows just how far greedy people will go just to keep making more money.

Wonder if they're thinking that the tunnel may have to be closed at some point - I mean it's pretty old.
Just a thought.

Yeah, I couldn't believe how obvious it was that certain politicians were bought off. There is literally nothing bad for any Michigander in building a new bridge EXCEPT for the Ambassador Bridge owners. And yet it's been treated like it's some wasteful, horrific government oppression.

In the old days, stuff like this would have been authorized a long time ago with no public outcry, because back in those days we realized not every issue needs to be a wedge issue to beat our opponents with. There were at least some who voted on whether an issue was smart rather than if it was ideological or not.

If that is the case, then I hope the supporters of the new bridge have taken that into account when they say that the new bridge will pay for itself in tolls. Because presumable many people will still use the old bridge as it is closer to the center of population. And since the old bridge won't be as congested with truckers coming from south of the city, it will be even a bigger draw.

Please explain.

You don't think they will go up on the new bridge? Let's see what happens when the toll collections come up short and the state is unable to pay back Canada.

Remember that the new bridge has already been paid for. The money for it is in Matty's back pocket. He has been collecting billions in tolls in order to build a new bridge. Now it looks like he will be able to keep that money. Meanwhile, we the taxpayers are undersigning for the funds that will be borrowed to build the new state bridge in the hopefull anticipation that the tolls will pay us back.
