My husband and I are looking into moving to the north country. Can anyone tell me a little bit about the cities up there? We are interested in living in one of the major cities (marquette, escanaba, or sau st marie). an anyone give me some details about these cities, night life, things to do, school systems, etc. My husband is a city boy so we are looking for as many of his familiar comforts as we can find.

If you're looking for something in the UP (or even northern part of the LP) that is anything like big city night life that just isn't what these areas of Michigan have to offer.

My hometown of Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan and the second largest city in the Upper Peninsula at 14,144 people.

It is right across the river from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, which at 79,800 is larger then the top five largest cities in the Upper Peninsula combined. Thus, the twin Saults together would give you a much larger urban environment then anywhere else in the Upper Peninsula.

Sault Ste. Marie Michigan is home to a small college in Lake Superior State University. Along with Laker Hockey, the college offers other activities such as clubs, and sometimes plays and other cultural events.

Sault Ste. Marie also has a theater in it's historical downtown that hosts many plays.

Sault Ste. Marie has many bars and nightclubs, as well as popular restaurants such as the Antler's, The Palace Saloon which has drinks and Mexican food, Zorbas Greek restaurant, Indo-China cafe and many other options on both sides of the river.

Sault Ste. Marie is well known for the Sault Locks, and we have a historical ship museum which can't be missed, the Museum Ship Valley Camp. They have some of the lifeboats of the Edmund Fitzgerald as well as many other exhibits!

Sault Ste. Marie is home to many old and historic buildings, including our Neo-Classical city hall:

As well as our 19th century French Second Empire Courthouse:

Sault Ste. Marie is home to the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, who own a Casino here. The Kewadin has hosted such attractions as Bill Cosby and Kiss in the past.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has the nearby Searchmont ski resort, if you happen to be a fan of skiing.

Attractions near Sault Ste. Marie in the Eastern Upper Peninsula include Tahquamenon falls, Mackinac Island, The Garlyn Zoo in Naubinway, and the Oswald Bear Ranch. The Pictured Rocks National lakeshore is about halfway between Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette near Munising.

Other great places in the Upper Peninsula include the Peninsula's largest city, Marquette. Being home to Northern Michigan University makes Marquette a real college town, and they have many attractions there. Houghton is another of The UP's college towns, home to Michigan Tech.
Menominee, Michigan would be another great place to consider. Population 8,599, however they are right across the river from Marinette, Wisconsin, population 10,968. Combined they are almost as big as Marquette. Menominee and Marinette are only an hour away from Green Bay, so you would be able to go to NFL games easily if you happen to be Football fans. Menominee is near The DeYoung Family Zoo in Wallace, MI, a zoo which was featured on the National Geographic channel and is home to over 30 big cats!

And keep in mind wereever you go in the UP, you aren't far at all from wilderness or wild animals. A few weeks ago I spotted some bald eagles in the tree behind my house, right in the middle of Sault Ste. Marie!

If you really need to find a place that's "city", the closest you'll get is Marquette, and that's a stretch. Don't get me wrong, I love Marquette and the area around, but it's not, in my opinion, "city". Sure, there is night life, but maybe not what you're use to. Out doors is where it's at, anywhere in the UP.

I understand that the UP isnt going to offer what detroit or GR does but I'm not interested in that. I grew up between escy and big bay but my husband grew up in downtown detroit. We are trying to find a nice balance and i told him the only way i could live in a city is if its in the UP.. bc then at least i can leave the city and be immersed in the wilderness. We need something with good schools bc im a middle school amth teacher, a night life in general it doesnt matter what they do s as there are things to do, and a young professionals crowd in mid 20 to late 30s. Does that exist in the UP?

Hm, well...I haven't been in the U.P. long enough to even venture an opinion (as if that's ever stopped me, haha)--but I can at least give an opinion of what I've seen so far-we're in Iron Mountain, and I've heard that between Iron Mountain and Kingsford (they are attached), that there is roughly 20,000 people. What I've seen here is people seem to be...how would I put it, there's a much slower pace of life, old-fashioned values, simplicity, simple things (the high school football games, weekly farmer's market, etc., etc.)-very small town atmosphere, puts me in mind of how things were decades ago. Nicest people in this area that I've ever met in my life, just very genuine, very kind. Lots of camo, lol- people love to hunt, fish, very outdoorsy area. If there is a young, professionals crowd around here, I'm not sure where it would be- but then again, that isn't really my thing so maybe there is, and I'm just not aware of it. Certainly possible. I do know I love it here, but when we came to the U.P., the things that I mentioned are the exact reason we came here.

It would seem to me that having lived downstate, here, and in N. MI, you would be able to live just about anywhere, and end up in woods of one sort or another within a short amount of time.

I think that Michigan is just awesome, from one end of it to the other. Outside of Detroit proper, there aren't many places in Michigan that I wouldn't want to live in!
